THE ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENDER LAW CENTER (EDLC) WORKS TO PROTECT THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES WHO ARE FIGHTING AGAINST HARM TO THEIR ENVIRONMENT.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENDER LAW CENTER (EDLC) HELPS PEOPLE IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH WHO ARE CONFRONTING THREATS OR HARM TO THEIR ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN RIGHTS. EDLC ASSISTS THESE ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENDERS BY DEVELOPING AND SUPPORTING LAWSUITS ON THEIR BEHALF, INCLUDING THROUGH THE PROVISION OF STRATEGIC ADVICE, LEGAL RESOURCES, AND OTHER FORMS OF SUPPORT. IN 2021, EDLC STAFF WORKED WITH OVER FORTY LAW FIRMS AND LEGAL NGOS, SEVERAL VOLUNTEER SCIENTISTS AND RESEARCHERS, AND NUMEROUS CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS ON OVER FIFTY MATTERS IN NEARLY TWO DOZEN COUNTRIES. THE NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS HELPED IN EACH CASE RANGED FROM ONE TO TENS OF THOUSANDS, WITH THE MAJORITY OF CASES BEING BROUGHT ON BEHALF OF COMMUNITIES OF HUNDREDS OR THOUSANDS OF INDIVIDUALS. IN ADDITION TO OTHER FORMS OF ASSISTANCE--INCLUDING STRATEGIC GUIDANCE, DRAFTING LEGAL BRIEFS, AND RECRUITING PRO BONO LAWYERS AND SCIENTISTSEDLC PROVIDED FUNDING FOR LITIGATION EXPENSES THROUGH AGREEMENTS WITH LAWYERS AND NGOS IN FIFTEEN COUNTRIES. THE OBJECTIVE OF ALL OF THESE EFFORTS WAS TO ASSIST ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENDERS BY HELPING TO: 1) INFLUENCE OR STOP RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS THAT THREATEN THE HEALTH, WAY OF LIFE, AND ENVIRONMENT OF AFFECTED COMMUNITIES; 2) OBTAIN REDRESS FROM CORPORATIONS AND GOVERNMENTS FOR HARMS CAUSED TO COMMUNITIES BY SUCH PROJECTS; 3) SUPPORT LAWSUITS FIGHTING CLIMATE CHANGE; AND 4) DEFEND AGAINST VIOLATIONS OF CIVIL AND POLITICAL RIGHTS RESULTING FROM UNFOUNDED CRIMINAL CHARGES AND CIVIL LAWSUITS, WHILE SEEKING TO END THE CULTURE OF IMPUNITY FOR SUCH VIOLATIONS.
