HISTORIC BOULDER'S EDUCATION PROGRAMS CAME ROARING BACK AS WE CELEBRATED OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY. LIVE TOURS INCLUDED HISTORY HIKES ON OPEN SPACE, A MODERN ARCHITECTURE HOMES TOUR AND TWO CELEBRATIONS IN LANDMARKED HOMES. PARTNERING WITH THE CITY OF BOULDER, OUR BIENNIAL AND POPULAR "MEET THE SPRITS" REENACTMENT EVENT WAS WELL ATTENDED AND RAISED OVER 5700 FOR PRESERVATION WORK AT THE COLUMBIA CEMETERY. WE DEVELOPED A SELF-GUIDED HISTORIC WALKING TOUR (AVAILABLE FREE ON THE POCKETSIGHTS APP): THE HISTORIC BLACK RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD "THE LITTLE RECTANGLE- AND MID- CENTURY MODERN. OUR STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST HIGHLIGHTED BOULDER LEGACY BUSINESSES. OUR SIGNATURE HOMES FOR THE HOLIDAYS TOUR FEATURED FIVE HISTORIC HOMES INCLUDING THE FORMER HOME OF ASTRONAUT SCOTT CARPENTER.
HISTORIC BOULDER PARTNERED WITH OWNER OF THE BOULDER THEATER TO OBTAIN A STATE HISTORIC PRESERVATION FUND PHASE II PLANNING GRANT FOR THE EVENTUAL REHABILITATION OF THE FAADE OF THE ICONIC BOULDER THEATER. THIS ART-DECO BUILDING IS IN THE HEART OF BOULDER'S DOWNTOWN HISTORIC DISTRICT (ON THE NATIONAL, STATE AND LOCAL HISTORIC REGISTERS) AND OPERATES AS A POPULAR CONCERT AND EVENT VENUE. THIS PROJECT IS A CONTINUATION OF THE ASSESSMENT GRANT WE SPONSORED IN 2020-2021 AFTER WHICH STEPS WERE TAKEN TO PREVENT ONGOING DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING. THIS YEAR'S PROJECT WILL RESULT IN CONSTRUCTION PLANS TO READY THE BUILDING FOR FULL RESTORATION OF THE STUCCO ON THE EXTERIOR. HISTORIC BOULDER ACTED AS FISCAL SPONSOR AND PROVIDED MATCHING FUNDS FOR THE PROJECT.
HISTORIC BOULDER HIRED AN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WHO DRAMATICALLY STEPPED UP OUR ADVOCACY PROGRAM. WE KICKED OFF THE YEAR IN FEBRUARY WITH THE SUCCESSFUL LANDMARKING OF THE ATRIUM BUILDING LOCATED IN THE HEART OF BOULDER'S CIVIC CENTER. TESTIFYING REGULARLY BEFORE THE CITY LANDMARKS BOARD, WE SOUGHT TO EXPAND THE BOUNDARY OF THE LANDMARKED CITY BANDSHELL- WHICH THE CITY COUNCIL TABLED TO WORK ON A LARGER CIVIC CENTER HISTORIC DISTRICT PROPOSAL. WE ASSISTED IN THE PLANNING FOR HISTORIC PROPERTIES ON CITY PARK LAND. WE JOINED IN EFFORTS TO SAVE THE THREATENED WORLD WAR 1 "9 MILE MARKERS" WHICH SERVED AS A GATEWAY TO BOULDER. WE PARTICIPATED IN THE HERITAGE ROUNDTABLE SQUARE NAIL AWARDS AND DEVELOPED PROGRAMMING FOR THE COLORADO PRESERVATION INC. CONFERENCE IN EARLY 2023.
