EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS: THE ARIZONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY AHS IS THE INSTITUTIONAL SPONSOR AND STATE COORDINATOR FOR NATIONAL HISTORY DAY NHD IN ARIZONA. NHD IS A YEAR-LONG PROGRAM FOCUSED ON HISTORICAL RESEARCH ANALYSIS AND CREATIVE EXPRESSION FOR 6TH-12TH GRADE STUDENTS. THE EXPERIENCE CULMINATES IN A SERIES OF CONTESTS AT THE LOACOAL AND STATE LEVELS AND AN ANNUAL NATIONAL COMPETITION IN THE NATIONS CAPITAL IN JUNE. WITH NHD THE STUDENTS BECOME THE HISTORIANS BUILDING THEIR CRITICALTHINKING SKILLS ANALYTICAL ABILITIES AND CONFIDENCE. NHD-AZ PROVIDES WORKSHOPS TEACHER AND JUDGE TRAINING HISTORY EDUCATION RESOURCES AND PROJECT CONSULTATION FROM STAFF HISTORIANS AND LIBRARIANS. OVERALL WE SERVE THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS AND CURRENTLY HAVE 4 REGIONAL CONTESTS AND ONE STATE CONTEST. THERE WERE 300 PARTICIPANTS IN THE REGIONAL COMPETITIONS OF WHICH 44 MADE IT TO THE NATIONAL COMPETITION. THE OUTREACH PROGRAM SERVES 63 CERTIFIED HISTORICAL INSTITUTIONS ACROSS THE STATE OF AZ THROUGH GRANTS MUSEUM WORKSHOPS HISTORY PRESENTATIONS PUBLICATIONS TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES AND THE AL MERITO" AWARD. THE PROGRAM AWARDED 23 GRANTS TO CERTIFIED HISTORICAL INSTITUTIONS IN AZ THIS YEAR TOTALING $32,893. THE AZ DIGITAL HUB WAS DEVELOPED IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19. IT IS A CENTRALIZED RESOURCE FOR EDUCATORS AND PARENTS LOOKING TO SHARE AZ HISTORY WITH THEIR STUDENTS AND CHILDREN. IT IS A PLACE TO FIND RECORDINGS OF PROGRAMS AND DIGITAL RESOURCES OF THE AHS. WE HAD 1 PAID INTERN TO SUPPORT ARCHIVES.
MUSEUMS: AHS OWNS AND OPERATIONS 4 MUSEUMS IN THE STATE. THEY FEATURE PERMANENT EXHIBITS THAT GIVE A BROAD OVERVIEW OF THE STATES HISTORY WITH LOCAL OBJECTS AND STORIES MIXED IN. EACH HAVE ROTATING GALLERIES THAT TYPICALLY FEATURE A NEW EXHIBIT EACH YEAR. IN TUCSON OUR EXHIBITS INCLUDED LOS DESCONOCIDOS: THE MIGRANT QUILT PROJECT 22-23 BARRY GOLDWATER K7UGA: ON THE AIR IN THE SKY & BEHIND THE LENS 20-23 WELCOME QUILTS: MIGRATION ART & HOPE 23-24 DRINKING LOCAL: A TOAST TO THE SOUTHWEST 23-24. IN TEMPE K.MCKENNA UNFRAMED: A PHOTO JOURNEY THROUGH NAVAJO & HOPI NATIONS 21-22 ON AIR 22-24 COVID MEMORIAL QUILT 22-23 CLIMATES OF INEQUALITY 22-23. IN FLAGSTAFF READY TO LAUNCH: ARIZONAS PLACE IN SPACE 22-23 IN YUMA GROWING YUMA: THE E.F.S STORY 22-23. IN ADDITION TO THE EXHIBITS THE MUSEUMS OFFER DIFFERENT TOPICS OF HISTORY THROUGH LECTURES BOOK AUTHOR SIGNINGS NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM PROGRAMS FILM SCREENINGS AND WORKSHOPS. TOURS HELP BRING HISTORY TO LIFE AND INCLUDE: HOLIDAY TOURS HISTORIC AND HAUNTED TROLLEY TOURS GHOST AND HISTORIC WALKING TOURS AND SPECIAL MONTHLY TOURS AT RIORDAN MANSION. THERE ARE SEVERAL SPECIAL EVENTS OFFERED INCLUDING: ARIZONA MEAD & CIDER FESTIVAL HISTORY ON TAP TOAST-A-GHOST PUB CRAWL FORT LOWELL DAYS REDONDO DAYS DINNER AND AUCTION AND DILLINGER DAYS POP-UP MUSEUM AT HOTEL CONGRESS. EACH MUSEUM IS USED AS A PRIVATE RENTAL VENUE FOR MULTIPLE EVENTS. IN COLLABORATION WITH PIMA COUNTY WE HELP CREATE THE EXHIBITS FOR THE SOUTHERN AZ VISITOR CENTER AT HISTORIC PIMA COUNTY COURTHOUSE.
PUBLICATIONS: PUBLISHED FOUR QUARTERLY ISSUES APPROX. 1100 COPIES EACH OF THE JOURNAL OF ARIZONA HISTORY AS REQUIRED BY ARS 41-763. THESE FOUR ISSUES INCLUDED 14 ORIGINAL RESEARCH ARTICLES ALL OF WHICH SUBSTANTIALLY ADD TO OUR COLLECTIVE KNOWLEDGE OF ARIZONA HISTORY. THEY ALSO INCLUDE 39 BOOK REVIEWS OF IMPORTANT BOOKS ON ARIZONA WESTER AND U.S. HISTORY ALLOWING OUR READERSHIP TO BE AWARE OF RELEVANT BOOKS OF INTEREST. ALL CURRENT ISSUES OF THE JOURNAL OF ARIZONA HISTORY ARE NOW ALSO AVAILABLE DIGITALLY ON THE WEBSITE OF PROJECT MUSE WHICH IS THE DIGITAL PUBLISHING ARM OF JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY PRESS. IN FY 2023 WE HAD 7,477 DOWNLOADS OF OUR ARTICLES AND BOOK REVIEWS ON THIS SITE. IN ADDITION ALL ISSUES OF THE JOURNAL OF ARIZONA HISTORY ARE AVAILABLE ON JSTOR AN ONLINE JOURNAL DATABASE THAT IS AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES AND AROUND THE GLOBE. THE CURRENT ISSUES OF THE JOURNAL WILL BE UPLOADED TO JSTOR IN FOUR YEARS AND ALL PAST ISSUES FROM 1960-2019 ARE AVAILABLE NOW. IN FISCAL YEAR 2023 WE HAD 32,651 DOWNLOADS OF OUR ARTICLES AND BOOK REVIEWS ON JSTOR. WE HAD 9 FELLOWSHIP GRANTS FOR VISITING RESEARCHERS TO STUDY AND SHARE ARIZONA HISTORY.
