FOR MORE THAN FIVE DECADES, PUBLIC ADVOCATES HAS CHALLENGED THE SYSTEMIC CAUSES OF POVERTY AND RACIAL DISCRIMINATION BY STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY VOICES IN PUBLIC POLICY AND ACHIEVING TANGIBLE LEGAL VICTORIES ADVANCING EDUCATION, HOUSING, TRANSPORTATION EQUITY, AND CLIMATE JUSTICE. WE SPUR CHANGE THROUGH COLLABORATION WITH GRASSROOTS GROUPS REPRESENTING LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES, PEOPLE OF COLOR AND IMMIGRANTS, COMBINED WITH STRATEGIC POLICY REFORM, MEDIA ADVOCACY, AND LITIGATION.

EDUCATION EQUITY: OUR EDUCATION EQUITY TEAM HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL ADVOCATES IN DRIVING THE STATE TO ENSURE ALL STUDENTS OBTAIN A HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATION, FROM LANDMARK CIVIL RIGHTS LAWSUITS ON SCHOOL FUNDING AND TEACHER QUALITY TO SHAPING THE LOCAL CONTROL FUNDING FORMULA (LCFF), WHICH PROVIDES SCHOOLS TARGETED FUNDING TO INCREASE AND IMPROVE SERVICES FOR SOME 3.5 MILLION LOW-INCOME STUDENTS, ENGLISH LEARNERS, AND FOSTER YOUTH; THE LOCAL CONTROL ACCOUNTABILITY PLAN (LCAP); THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL DASHBOARD; AND THE CRADLE-TO-CAREER DATA SYSTEM FOR TRACKING STUDENT PROGRESS FROM PRE-K THROUGH COLLEGE AND CAREER. IN 2020-21, WE STRENGTHENED AND ENFORCED THE LCFF'S EQUITABLE FUNDING, TRANSPARENCY, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT REQUIREMENTS AND WON HISTORIC INVESTMENTS IN RACIALLY-JUST, RELATIONSHIP-CENTERED COMMUNITY SCHOOLS ($3 BILLION), (CONTINUED AT SCHEDULE O)
METROPOLITAN EQUITY: OUR METROPOLITAN EQUITY TEAM ADVOCATES FOR EQUITABLE DEVELOPMENT, AFFORDABLE HOUSING, TENANT PROTECTIONS, INCREASED LOCAL TRANSIT SERVICE, AND POLICIES TO BREAK DOWN PATTERNS OF SEGREGATION AND INEQUITABLE ALLOCATION OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE RESOURCES. IN FISCAL YEAR 2020-21, WE BUILT AND EXPANDED REGIONAL AND STATEWIDE NETWORKS THAT CONNECT GRASSROOTS AND ADVOCACY ORGANIZATIONS AND ELEVATE THE VOICES OF LOW-INCOME CALIFORNIANS AND COMMUNITIES OF COLOR IN LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND STATE POLICY.
