SEE STATEMENT ATTACHEDTHE MISSION OF SLIDE RANCH IS TO CONNECT CHILDREN TO NATURE. SLIDE RANCH CULTIVATES HEALTHY BODIES AND MINDS AND FOSTERS FUTURE GENERATIONS OF ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDS. FOUNDED IN 1970, SLIDE RANCH IS A NON-PROFIT EDUCATIONAL FARM AND NATURE CENTER LOCATED NORTH OF SAN FRANCISCO WITHIN THE GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL RECREATION AREA (GGNRA) AND SERVES OVER 10,000 YOUTH AND ADULTS ANNUALLY FROM ALL OVER THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA. BY FARMING, COOKING, CARING FOR ANIMALS AND EXPLORING COASTAL WILDERNESS, SLIDE RANCH TEACHES PEOPLE OF ALL AGES TO SEE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THEIR OWN HEALTH, A HEALTHY FOOD SYSTEM AND A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT. THE SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY GROUP PROGRAM IS SLIDE RANCH'S PRIMARY EDUCATION PROGRAM, PROVIDING DAY AND OVERNIGHT FIELD TRIP PROGRAMS TO SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA SCHOOL GROUPS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO OVER 4,000 PARTICIPANTS ANNUALLY. FOR MANY PARTICIPANTS, THIS WILL BE THEIR FIRST TIME SEEING THE OCEAN AND EXPLORING TIDEPOOLS, CAMPING UNDER THE STARS, HARVESTING FOOD, OR MILKING A GOAT. STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IS ASSURED BY TEACHING IN SMALL GROUP SIZES OF EIGHT STUDENTS PER SLIDE RANCH TEACHER. HANDS-ON, EXPERIENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM CONNECTS CHILDREN TO NATURE AND ALIGNS WITH CALIFORNIA EDUCATION STANDARDS.
EACH YEAR, SEVEN INTERNS ARE SELECTED FROM A HIGHLY COMPETITIVE GROUP OF APPLICANTS TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ELEVEN-MONTH RESIDENTIAL TEACHING INTERNSHIP; FOUR ADDITIONAL INTERNS COME FOR A THREE-MONTH SUMMER INTERNSHIP. SLIDE RANCH'S TEACHERS-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM PROVIDES INTENSIVE PROFESSIONAL TEACHER TRAINING IN ALL ASPECTS OF OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION, STEWARDSHIP, AND SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE. INTERNS LIVE AND WORK AT THE RANCH, PLANNING AND LEADING EXPERIENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR OVER 8,000 PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS EACH YEAR. TEACHERS-IN-RESIDENCE ALSO LEARN HOW TO OPERATE A SUSTAINABLE FARM, INCLUDING GROWING AND HARVESTING FOOD, LAND STEWARDSHIP AND BEST PRACTICES IN ANIMAL HUSBANDRY.
