FISCAL SPONSORSHIPS:IN 2021, WE PROVIDED $2.1 MILLION IN FUNDING AND OTHER FILMMAKER SERVICES TO FILM AND MEDIA PROJECTS THROUGH FISCAL SPONSORSHIP. WE SEE THIS SUPPORT AS INEXTRICABLY LINKED TO OUR COMMITMENT TO INVEST IN STORYTELLERS AND AMPLIFY THE NUMBER OF, AND AUDIENCE FOR, ENVIRONMENTAL STORIES. IN 2021, ONE SPONSORED FILM, "THE LOVE BUGS" WON AN EMMY FOR OUTSTANDING SHORT DOCUMENTARY.
REDFORD CENTER GRANTS:REDFORD CENTER GRANTS PROVIDES DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTION FUNDS, STORY AND NETWORKING SUPPORT TO FILMMAKERS WORKING ON ENVIRONMENTALLY-FOCUSED FILM PROJECTS THAT DRIVE AWARENESS, ENGAGEMENT AND ACTION ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS. FUNDED BY A NUMBER OF MAJOR DONORS, 2021 WAS THE SECOND YEAR OF THE THIRD, TWO-YEAR CYCLE OF THE PROGRAM, WHICH LAUNCHED IN 2016. WE CONTINUED TO SUPPORT OUR COHORT OF 22 FILM PROJECTS POISED FOR TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT, TRIPLING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF GRANTEES FROM PAST COHORTS. THIS DIVERSE PORTFOLIO OF FILMMAKERS AND PROJECTS REPRESENTS NECESSARY VOICES AND PERSPECTIVES ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES, ILLUMINATING STORIES FROM PEOPLE ON THE FRONTLINES AND COVERING A RANGE OF PRESSING ISSUES INCLUDING FOOD SECURITY AND SOVEREIGNTY, CLIMATE SOLUTIONS AND JUST RECOVERY, ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS AND COMMUNITY HEALTH, RACIAL JUSTICE AND CIVIC PARTICIPATION, INDIGENOUS WISDOM AND RIGHTS, AND ENDANGERED HABITAT AND SPECIES PROTECTION, AMONG OTHER URGENT ISSUES.
THE NATURE FILM PROJECT:THE RHYTHMS OF MODERN-DAY SOCIETY AND TECHNOLOGY COMBINED HAVE INADVERTENTLY SET HUMANITY ON A PATH TO BECOMING AN INDOOR SPECIES. MOST AMERICANS SPEND AN AVERAGE OF 90% OF THEIR LIVES INDOORS AND CHILDREN PLAY FREELY OUTDOORS FOR AN AVERAGE OF FOUR TO SEVEN MINUTES A DAY. THE NATURE FILM PROJECT WILL EXPLORE SOLUTIONS TO CREATING NATURE ACCESS FOR ALL THROUGH A MULTIFACETED MEDIA PROJECT THAT PUTS SOUND, IMAGERY, STORY AND SCIENCE BEHIND A PHENOMENON DEEPLY FELT AROUND THE WORLD: THAT HUMANS AND NATURE ARE INSEPARABLE AND THAT CONNECTING WITH THE OUTDOORS HAS A PROFOUNDLY POSITIVE EFFECT ON HUMAN HEALTH. HUMANS EVOLVED SYMBIOTICALLY WITH NATURE; WE ARE PREDISPOSED TO CONNECT WITH AND BE OUR HEALTHIEST SELVES WHEN ENGAGING WITH THE OUTDOORS. THIS PROJECT EXPLORES HOW TO SUPPORT DIFFERENT FILM AND MEDIA PIECES (AND ASSOCIATED IMPACT CAMPAIGN) TO SHARE THIS STORY AND THE HEALTH IMPACTS OF NATURE ACCESS.REDFORD CENTER STORIES:IN 2021, OUR YOUTH ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE STORYTELLING INITIATIVE, REDFORD CENTER STORIES, COMPLETED ITS SECOND SCHOOL YEAR AND EXTENDED INTO HIGH SCHOOL AS IT ENTERED ITS THIRD SCHOOL YEAR. AS A GO-TO RESOURCE FOR EDUCATORS, AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM LEADERS, YOUTH DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATIONS, AND HOMESCHOOLING PARENTS, THE PROGRAM OFFERS A FREE AND FLEXIBLE, FILM-BASED CURRICULUM AND A GLOBAL FILMMAKING CHALLENGE FOR YOUTH AGES 10 TO 18 INTERESTED IN SHARING THEIR VIEWS ON ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE.
