Part 3
THE LOS ANGELES METROPOLITAN AREA IS GEOGRAPHICALLY LARGE AND ETHNICALLY DIVERSE. IT IS COMPRISED OF MANY SEPARATE COMMUNITIES WHOSE MEMBERS OFTEN DO NOT UNDERSTAND OR RELATE TO MEMBERS OF THE OTHER COMMUNITIES WITHIN THE REGION, MAKING CIVIC LEADERSHIP MORE COMPLICATED. WHERE AT ONE TIME CIVIC LEADERSHIP MAY HAVE BEEN PROVIDED BY A GROUP OF DOWNTOWN BUSINESS LEADERS, 21ST CENTURY LOS ANGELES IS A VERY DIFFERENT PLACE. THERE ARE A GREAT NUMBER OF DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS WHO SEEK TO AFFECT THE POLITICAL AND CIVIC LIFE OF THE REGION. HOWEVER, THEY DO NOT OFTEN COME TOGETHER.THE CIVIC ALLIANCE IS COMPRISED OF RECOGNIZED AND RESPECTED LEADERS FROM DIFFERENT NON-PROFIT AND FOR-PROFIT COMMUNITIES WITHIN THE METROPOLITAN AREA. WHILE NO SINGLE GROUP CAN PRETEND TO UNDERSTAND OR SPEAK FOR THE VARIED INTERESTS IN THE REGION - AND THE CIVIC ALLIANCE DOES NOT PRETEND TO DO SO - CIVIC ALLIANCE MEMBERS COME TOGETHER ON A REGULAR BASIS TO DISCUSS MAJOR ISSUES AFFECTING THE REGION, TO UNDERSTAND DIFFERENCES OF OPINION, AND TO SEEK CONSENSUS ON POLICY DIRECTION.THE CIVIC ALLIANCE WILL WORK WITH THE ELECTED LEADERSHIP WITHIN THE REGION AS WELL AS WITH THOSE WHO HAVE INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WELFARE OF THE REGION, INCLUDING THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR EDUCATION, TRANSPORTATION, CULTURE, HOUSING, HEALTH AND PUBLIC SAFETY, IN ORDER MAKE THE REGION THE BEST PLACE POSSIBLE TO LIVE, WORK AND RAISE OUR FAMILIES.
