THE AMERICAN CONSERVATION FILM FESTIVAL (ACFF) OFFERED IN-PERSON SCREENINGS FOR THE SPRING 2023 FESTIVAL. AT THE NEWLY-RENOVATED SHEPHERDSTOWN OPERA HOUSE, ACFF OFFERED 17 FILMS IN 29 SCREENINGS ACROSS A THREE-DAY WEEKEND IN MARCH. EVERY FILM HAD OPEN-CAPTIONS IN ORDER TO BE ACCESSIBLE TO THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING COMMUNITIES. ALL TICKETS FOR THE FESTIVAL SOLD OUT PRIOR TO OPENING NIGHT. FIVE AWARDS WERE GIVEN TO FILMMAKERS. OUR YOUTH ENGAGEMENT EFFORT, ACFF'S NEXT GENERATION CAPTURE CONSERVATION CONTEST, AWARDED FOUR FILM AWARDS TO STUDENT FILMMAKERS UNDER THE AGE OF 18 AS WELL. DURING THE FESTIVAL, EVOLVE SHEPHERDSTOWN SERVED AS THE FESTIVAL'S FREE POP-UP HEADQUARTERS, A PLACE FOR GUESTS TO MEET REPRESENTATIVES FROM CONSERVATION GROUPS LIKE SOLAR HOLLER, SKY TRUTH, TROUT UNLIMITED, WV RIVERS, GARDEN STEWARDS, AND OAK SPRINGS GARDEN FOUNDATION. FILM STARS AND FILMMAKERS ATTENDED THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND, INCLUDING THE ON-SCREEN PERSONALITIES FROM HELLBENT AND LITTLE STREAM, BIG MAGIC. SHEPHERDSTOWN RESIDENT MARY ANNE HITT, INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE ADVOCATE AND ACTIVIST READ AN EXCERPT FROM HER ESSAY INCLUDED IN ALL WE CAN SAVE: TRUTH, COURAGE AND SOLUTIONS FOR THE CLIMATE CRISIS. THE PUBLIC WAS INVITED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA'S NATIVE BROOK TROUT FROM THAN HITT, RESEARCH FISH BIOLOGIST WITH THE UGS. EVOLVE ALSO FEATURED AN ART INSTALLATION "SCHOOL OF TROUT CREATED BY FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS AT SHEPHERDSTOWN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. ACFF STAFF WORKED WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT OF SHENANDOAH UNIVERSITY TO ALLOW STUDENTS TO REVIEW FESTIVAL FILMS AND PUT ON A BEST OF FEST EVENT IN OCTOBER FOR STUDENTS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR ACFF ALSO SCREENED FILMS AT THE BARNS OF ROSE HILL IN BERRYVILLE, VA AND AT OAK SPRING GARDEN FOUNDATION IN UPPERVILLE, VA AND AT SAM MICHAELS PARK EARTH DAY SCREENING IN HARPERS FERRY, WV. IN ADVANCE OF THE 2024 FESTIVAL, THE ORGANIZATION RECEIVED AND CURATED 231 FILM SUBMISSIONS FROM 36 COUNTRIES.
