THE LITERACY NETWORK OF SOUTH BERKSHIRE, INC. (LITNET) HAS BEEN PROVIDING FREE, ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING SESSIONS FOR ADULTS SINCE 1991. OUR CURRICULUM OFFERS ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL), CITIZENSHIP TEST PREPARATION, HISET TEST PREPARATION, AND ADULT BASIC EDUCATION TO BETTER SERVE THE LARGE POPULATION OF IMMIGRANTS WHO LIVE AND WORK IN BERKSHIRE COUNTY. BY PROVIDING FUNDAMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT, LITNET STRIVES TO GIVE OUR ADULT STUDENTS THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO SUCCEED IN THEIR JOBS, SUPPORT THEIR FAMILIES, AND ENGAGE WITH THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITIES. AT ANY GIVEN TIME DURING THE YEAR, LITNET SUPPORTS MORE THAN 145 +/- STUDENT/TUTOR PAIRS. AT THE CLOSE OF 2021, LITNET HAD 142 ACTIVE TUTOR/STUDENT PAIRS, MOST BACK TO WORKING TOGETHER IN PERSON AFTER A PANDEMIC THAT LED TO A PREDOMINANCE OF VIRTUAL TUTORING. DURING 2021 EIGHTEEN LITNET LEARNERS BECAME NEW AMERICANS THROUGH CITIZENSHIP TUTORING; ALL OF THESE LEARNERS WERE RECIPIENTS OF THE MATTHEW AND HANNAH KEATOR FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FOR NEW AMERICANS. IN 2021, 92% OF OUR LEARNERS IMPROVED THEIR ENGLISH LEVELS, 3 LEARNERS WORKED TOWARD THEIR GED/HISET EXAMS, 24 OBTAINED BETTER JOBS, AND 14 IMPROVED THEIR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.
