BUTTE ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL'S MISSION IS TO PROTECT AND DEFEND THE LAND, AIR, AND WATER OF BUTTE COUNTY AND THE SURROUNDING REGION THROUGH ACTION, ADVOCACY, AND EDUCATION.

THE RECYCLING AND RUBBISH EDUCATION PROGRAM SEEKS TO EDUCATE BUTTE COUNTY'S COMMUNITY ABOUT THE SOLID WASTE STREAM AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE 4 RS: REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, AND ROT (COMPOST). THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES FREE HANDS-ON, INTERACTIVE EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS FOR AGES K-12. THE BUTTE ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL CONDUCTS A MINIMUM OF 45 IN-CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS EACH YEAR, SEX PRESENTATIONS AT PUBLIC CONFERENCES AND EVENTS, FIVE HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE PRESENTATIONS ON AUTO SHOP OIL DISPOSAL, AS WELL AS COORDINATING FIELD TRIPS TO THE NEAL ROAD RECYCLING & WASTE FACILITY.


BUTTE ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL HAS PARTNERED WITH THE CITY OF CHICO ON A THREE YEAR URBAN FOREST TREE PLANTING CAMPAIGN. WORKING WITH THE CITY'S URBAN FOREST MANAGER, THIS CAL-FIRE FUNDED PROJECT AIMS TO INCREASE CHICO'S URBAN FOREST WITH OVER 700 TREES BY MARCH OF 2022, AND WE ARE ON TRACK TO EXCEED THAT GOAL! CHICO'S URBAN FOREST IS A UNIQUE AND PRECIOUS FEATURE OF TOWN THAT WE GET TO ENJOY AND BENEFIT FROM OVER MANY GENERATIONS. THERE ARE OVER 35,000 TREES IN NEIGHBORHOODS AND MUNICIPAL AREAS, BUT THERE ARE STILL OVER 6,000 VACANT TREE SITES IN THE CITY WITHOUT A TREE! THE BENEFITS THEY PROVIDE INCLUDE: REDUCTION OF OVERALL CO2 EMISSIONS, CONSERVATION OF WATER, LESSEN SOIL EROSION, SHADE AND MITIGATION OF ENERGY COSTS, AND INCREASE IN WILDLIFE AND PLANT DIVERSITY.


EACH YEAR, THE BUTTE ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL ORGANIZES A FULL CALENDAR OF EVENTS TO GET CITIZENS ENGAGED AND ACTIVE IN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN OUR COUNTY. THIS YEAR'S MAIN EVENT WAS THE BIDWELL PARK & CHICO CREEKS CLEAN-UP. BEC ORGANIZED 584 VOLUNTEERS TO PULL 43,403 POUNDS OF TRASH OUT OF BIG CHICO CREEK, LITTLE CHICO CREEK, LINDO CHANNEL, COMMANCHE CREEK, AND TEICHERT PONDS.
