OUR PRIMARY PURPOSE IS TO FOSTER INTERCULTURAL AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING THROUGH IN-DEPTH ENCOUNTERS WITH THE WORLDS PERFORMING ARTS TRADITIONS. TO THAT END, WE SPONSOR EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH, PERFORMANCES, AND CULTURAL PROGRAMS ABROAD.

WORLD MUSIC IN THE SCHOOLS, A UNIQUE PROGRAM PRESENTED BY THE CENTER FOR WORLD MUSIC, PROMOTES AWARENESS, SKILLS, AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE RICH PERFORMING ARTS TRADITIONS OF THE WORLD THROUGH WEEKLY HANDS-ON CLASSES AND PERIODIC STUDENT-INTERACTIVE ASSEMBLIES IN PRE-K12 SAN DIEGO AREA SCHOOLS. FROM JULY 1, 2020 TO JUNE 30, 2021 THE CENTER FOR WORLD MUSIC REACHED 5,621 STUDENTS THROUGH 29 WEEKLY ARTIST RESIDENCIES AND 27 INTERACTIVE ASSEMBLIES, PRESENTING 19 DIFFERENT MUSIC AND DANCE TRADITIONS IN 18 AREA SCHOOLS AND ONLINE VIA DISTANCE LEARNING. APPROXIMATELY 2,471 OF THESE STUDENTS RECEIVED SUSTAINED WEEKLY INSTRUCTION. UPWARDS OF 60% OF PARTICIPANTS ARE FROM LOW-INCOME, UNDERSERVED AREAS OF SAN DIEGO. THIS PROGRAM IS SUPPORTED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS, THE CALIFORNIA ARTS COUNCIL, AS WELL AS PTAS, PTOS, SCHOOL FOUNDATIONS, PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS, AND THE GENEROSITY OF INDIVIDUAL DONORS.
THE CENTER RUNS A SCHOOL FOR TEACHING ODISSI DANCE (A CLASSICAL DANCE FORM FROM INDIA) TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS AS WELL AS TO STUDENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS WITH MANY PUBLIC PERFORMANCES BY THE STUDENTS AND THE TEACHER. THE TEACHERS ARE BROUGHT FROM INDIA WITH P-3 VISAS TO BE IN RESIDENCE FOR ONE YEAR. THE CURRENT NUMBER OF STUDENTS ARE ABOUT 30 WITH TUITIONS VARYING FROM $20 TO $35 FOR ONE-HOUR CLASS.
THE CENTER FOR WORLD MUSICS CONCERT AND COMMUNITY WORKSHOP PROGRAMS OFFERS PERFORMANCES YEAR-ROUND IN A VARIETY OF VENUES ACROSS THE SAN DIEGO REGION. ANNUALLY AND ON AVERAGE, CWM PERFORMANCES COVER 12 DIFFERENT WORLD MUSIC OR DANCE RADITIONS ACROSS SAN DIEGO FOR ALL AGES. DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, THE CENTER FOR WORLD MUSIC HALTED ALL IN-PERSON PERFORMANCES.FROM JULY 1, 2020 TO JUNE 30, 2021, THE CWM PRESENTED THREE CONCERTS AND THREE COMMUNITY PROGRAMS REACHING AN ESTIMATED 500 AUDIENCE MEMBERS. CONCERTS AND WORKSHOPS ARE PRESENTED BY THE CENTER FOR WORLD MUSIC OR IN COLLABORATION WITH ARTNERING NON-PROFIT, CULTURAL, AND EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS. THIS PROGRAM IS SUPPORTED BY THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO COMMISSION FOR ARTS AND CULTURE, PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS, THE GENEROSITY OF DONORS, AND TICKET SALES.
