BACKBONE CAMPAIGN AMPLIFIES THE ASPIRATIONS OF WE THE PEOPLE WITH CREATIVE STRATEGIES AND ARTFUL ACTIVISM
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
BACKBONE CAMPAIGN'S ARTFUL ACTIVISM DEVELOPED AND DEPLOYED INNOVATIVE SKILLS, TACTICS, AND CREATIVITY TO AMPLIFY PROGRESSIVE VALUES TO INFORM AND INSPIRE THE PUBLIC'S MIND, HEART AND IMAGINATION. WE HOSTED AN ACTION CAMP AND TRAINED 45 BIPOC LEADERS IN KAYAKTIVISM, THEN SUPPORTED A POWERFUL ACTION NEAR THE SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS, DEMANDING ZERO EMISSIONS NOW! WE UTILIZED OUR PROJECTION GEAR AND OTHER CREATIVE TOOLS TO CALL FOR SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE, PROGRESSIVE TAXATION, CLIMATE ACTION, MEDICARE FOR ALL, RACIAL JUSTICE, ENDING SINGLE USE PLASTICS, STOPPING EXTINCTION, ASYLEE PROTECTIONS, WORKERS' RIGHTS AND MORE.
OUR SOLUTIONARY RAIL PROJECT CHAMPIONS RAIL IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST AND RESEARCHES AND ADVOCATES FOR ELECTRIFICATION, MODESHIFT, AND TRANSMISSION OF GREEN ENERGY ALONG RAIL RIGHT OF WAY. SOLUTIONARY RAIL ALSO, THROUGH ITS WEBINARS AND CALLS TO ACTION, HELPED TO AMPLIFY THE VOICES AND DEMANDS OF RAILROAD WORKERS AS THEY PREPARED FOR A STRIKE. IN 2022, WE DID A DEEP DIVE INTO WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO TRANSITION THE SHIPPING OF GRAIN IN SE WASHINGTON OFF BARGES AND ONTO RAIL, IN THE EVENT THE LOCK AND DAM SYSTEM OF THE LOWER SNAKE RIVER IS SHUT DOWN. OUR RESEARCH RESULTED IN THE "TRAINS CAN SAVE SALMON PLAN." IT IS A BLUEPRINT FOR A RESILIENT AND REVITALIZED REGION IN SE WASHINGTON, WITH CONNECTED FREIGHT AND PASSENGER RAIL.
BACKBONE CAMPAIGN EXECUTED A NUMBER OF CREATIVE ACTIONS ADVOCATING FOR THE RESTORATION OF THE SNAKE RIVER THROUGH BREACHING THE FOUR DAMS ON THE LOWER PART OF THE RIVER. WE TOOK PROPS - PUPPETS AND BANNERS - TO WASHINGTON DC SEVERAL TIMES, SHOWED UP ACROSS THE REGION WITH COMPELLING IMAGERY, BANNERED ON OVERPASSES, CREATED HUMAN ORCA MURALS WITH HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE, AND LED PROCESSIONS IN COMMUNITIES, TO DRAW ATTENTION TO THE URGENT NEED TO STOP EXTINCTION OF ORCA AND SALMON. WE RECEIVED TELEVISION COVERAGE OF OUR CREATIVE ACTIONS, AS WELL AS EARNED MEDIA IN NEWSPAPERS, FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES TO REGIONAL NEWSPAPERS.
