MAZAMAS PROMOTES MOUTAINEERING AND WILDERNESS EXPLORATION. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO COLLECTS AND DISSEMINATES AUTHORITATIVE AND SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION CONCERNING MOUNTAINS AND WILDERNESS, AND ENCOURAGES THE PRESERVATION OF THE NATURAL WORLD.

ACTIVITIES & EVENTS: THE MAZAMAS OFFER ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING HIKING, CLIMBING, BACKPACKING, AND LOCAL STREET RAMBLES, LED BY VOLUNTEER LEADERS. PARTICIPATION IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND SUBJECT TO THE PHYSICAL FITNESS REQUIRED FOR EACH ACTIVITY. PARTICIPANTS ARE CHARGED A FEE FOR ACTIVITIES; MEMBER FEES ARE USUALLY LOWER THAN NONMEMBER FEES. IN A TYPICAL YEAR, APPROXIMATELY 1,500 CLIMBERS PARTICIPATE IN OUR CLIMBING PROGRAM, 2,000 HIKERS PARTICIPATE IN OUR HIKING AND STREET RAMBLES PROGRAM, AND A FEW HUNDRED PARTICIPATE IN SPECIAL EVENTS. OUR OUTINGS ARE LONGER DURATION ACTIVITIES THAT ARE FIVE DAYS OR LONGER. THEY VARY IN SCOPE AND NUMBER FROM YEAR TO YEAR, DEPENDING ON VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP. MOST OUTINGS INVOLVE HIKING, CLIMBING, BACKPACKING, TREKKING, OR SKIING, BUT SOME MAY INCLUDE WATER SPORTS OR IN-TOWN EXCURSIONS. ALTHOUGH MOST OUTINGS ARE HELD IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES, SOME TRAVEL TO FOREIGN DESTINATIONS. WE ALSO OFFER EVENTS, INCLUDING THE PORTLAND ALPINE FEST, THAT CONTAIN A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT EVENTS DURING A DEFINED PERIOD OF TIME.
FACILITIES: MAZAMAS OWNS A LODGE LOCATED IN GOVERNMENT CAMP, OREGON ON US FOREST SERVICE LAND. MEMBERS, SKI CLUBS AND SCHOOLS, AND OTHER NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDING YOUTH GROUPS IN THE PORTLAND, OREGON AREA USED THE FACILITY DURING THE YEAR. THE LODGE IS ALSO USED AS A BASE FOR CLIMBS OF MT. HOOD LED BY THE MAZAMAS. THE NORDIC SKI PATROL HOUSES ITS RESCUE EQUIPMENT AT THE LODGE. USERS ARE CHARGED A FEE TO COVER THE DIRECT COSTS OF LODGING AND MEALS. MAZAMAS MOUNTAINEERING CENTER IS THE MAZAMAS HEADQUARTERS WHERE OUR EXTENSIVE LIBRARY, MUSEUM AND HISTORICAL ARCHIVES ARE HOUSED AS WELL AS A LARGE AUDITORIUM FOR FIRST AID TRAINING, CULTURAL & SCIENTIFIC PRESENTATIONS AND WHERE NUMEROUS EDUCATION AND ACTIVITY PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS: THE MAZAMAS CONDUCT CLIMBING EDUCATION IN MOUNTAINEERING, ROCK CLIMBING, ICE CLIMBING, BACKCOUNTRY SKIING, NORDIC SKIING, WILDERNESS FIRST AID, AND OTHER AREAS RELATED TO MOUNTAIN-RELATED OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES. THE COURSES INCLUDE TECHNIQUES, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS, AND CONSERVATION ETHICS. NON-MEMBERS MAY PARTICIPATE IN CLASSES OFFERED THROUGH THE MAZAMAS. IN A TYPICAL YEAR, MORE THAN 600 STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. RESEARCH - MAZAMAS GIVES GRANTS THAT FUND RESEARCH RELATED TO THE ALPINE ENVIRONMENT INCLUDING THE LONG-TERM STUDY OF GLACIERS. NUMEROUS PHOTOS ARE ARCHIVED FOR PUBLIC USE. PROGRAMS: THE MAZAMAS OFFER INFORMATIVE AND ENTERTAINING PROGRAMS THAT ARE HELD AT BOTH THE MAZAMA MOUNTAINEERING CENTER AND ONLINE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THE OUTDOOR-ORIENTED PROGRAMS ARE TYPICALLY FREE, WITH A SUGGESTED DONATION, AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. THEY RANGE FROM MOVIES AND SLIDESHOWS TO LECTURES AND DEMONSTRATIONS. YOUTH OUTREACH: THE MAZAMAS PARTNERS WITH LOCAL YOUTH ORGANIZATIONS TO TEACH STUDENTS OF ALL AGES ABOUT CLIMBING, HIKING, OUTDOOR SAFETY, AND STEWARDSHIP. IN A TYPICAL YEAR, WE SERVE 300+ STUDENTS THROUGH OUR YOUTH OUTREACH PROGRAMMING. WE ALSO OFFER A SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM THAT IS BASED AT THE MAZAMA MOUNTAINEERING CENTER THAT SERVES UP TO 400 STUDENTS AGES 4-10 DURING THE SUMMER.
