MOCKINGBIRD FAMILY RECREATES THE POSITIVE QUALITIES AND RESOURCES FOUND IN NATURALLY THRIVING FAMILIES IN PART THROUGH THE ROLE OF THE HUB HOMEAN EXPERIENCED AND LICENSED FOSTER CARE FAMILY WHO PROVIDES SUPPORT TO OTHER FOSTER FAMILIES PARTICIPATING IN MOCKINGBIRD FAMILY. THE COMMUNITY NETWORK CREATED BY MOCKINGBIRD FAMILY FOCUSES ON THE INDIVIDUAL NEEDS OF ITS YOUTH BY ENSURING FOSTER PARENTS ARE HIGHLY SKILLED AND EFFECTIVE IN PROVIDING THE BEST CARE FOR OUR COMMUNITY'S YOUTHS. WHEN FOSTER FAMILIES ARE DEVELOPED AND BROUGHT INTO A SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY LIKE MOCKINGBIRD FAMILY, SOCIAL WORKERS ARE MORE ABLE TO FOCUS ON SUCCESSFUL REUNIFICATIONS WITH FAMILY AND LOVED ONES AND OTHER MEANINGFUL PERMANENCY OPTIONS FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE.


THE MOCKINGBIRD SOCIETY'S YOUTH PROGRAMS WORK IS STATEWIDE IN SCOPE AND CONSISTS OF SEVEN CHAPTERS OF YOUTH, AGES 13 TO 26, WHO ARE OR HAVE BEEN IN THE FOSTER CARE SYSTEM OR HAVE EXPERIENCED OR ARE AT RISK OF EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS. TWO CHAPTERS ARE LOCATED IN SEATTLE, AND THE OTHERS ARE IN TACOMA, EVERETT, OLYMPIA, YAKIMA, AND SPOKANE. NETWORK ACTIVITIES INCLUDE YOUTH CHAPTER MEETINGS, PUBLIC SPEAKING EVENTS, WORKGROUPS, TRAININGS AND WRITING FOR THE MOCKINGBIRD TIMES.


PUBLIC POLICY & ADVOCACY WORKS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH YOUTH PROGRAMS TO ENGAGE, EDUCATE, AND ACTIVATE THE BROADER PUBLIC IN UNDERSTANDING AND SUPPORTING CHILD WELFARE REFORM, WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION TO FOSTER CARE AND YOUTH HOMELESSNESS. A NONPARTISAN APPROACH IS USED TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH POLICYMAKERS AND PROVIDE SUPPORT AND TRAINING IN THE AREAS OF CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND SYSTEM REFORM TO MOCKINGBIRD'S YOUTH PROGRAMS.
