FUTUREWISE ADVOCATES FOR LOCAL PLANNING AND LAND USE POLICIES ACROSS THE STATE. IN 2021, FUTUREWISE HELPED FOUND AND BECAME THE BACKBONE STAFFING ORGANIZATION FOR THE EASTSIDE HOUSING ROUNDTABLE, A NEW COALITION OF BUSINESS, HOUSING AND SERVICE PROVIDERS, ENVIRONMENTAL AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS ADVOCATING FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN EAST KING COUNTY. WE COMPLETED A RIPARIAN DEMONSTRATION PROJECT IN PASCO TO SEED IMPROVED HABITAT ALONG THE MID-COLUMBIA. WE HIRED NEW STAFF TO LEAD LOCAL EFFORTS IN SPOKANE AND PORT ANGELES.
FUTUREWISE ADVOCATES TO IMPROVE PLANNING AND LAND USE POLICIES AT THE STATE LEVEL. IN 2021, FUTUREWISE SUCCESSFULLY ADVOCATED TO CREATE STRONGER STATE REQUIREMENTS THAT CITIES AND COUNTIES PLAN FOR AND ACCOMMODATE THE HOUSING NEEDS OF ALL INCOME LEVELS. OUR ADVOCACY ALSO LED TO REQUIREMENTS FOR AN ASSESSMENT OF RACIAL DISPARATE IMPACTS OF LOCAL POLICIES THAT HAVE LED TO EXCLUSION AND/OR DISPLACEMENT AND ACTIVE MEASURES TO UNDUE THOSE HARMS ON COMMUNITIES OF COLOR. FINALLY, THIS NEW PACKAGE OF POLICIES ALSO LIMITS LOCAL GOVERNMENTS ABILITY TO RESTRICT THE PLACEMENT OF EMERGENCY HOUSING AND EMERGENCY SHELTER.
FUTUREWISE APPEALS LOCAL PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT REGULATIONS THAT HARM THE ENVIRONMENT, FARMLAND, AND COMMUNITIES AND VIOLATE STATE LAW. IN 2021, FUTUREWISE SETTLED AN APPEAL OF PIERCE COUNTYS CENTERS AND CORRIDORS PLAN COVERING 50,000 ACRES AND 200,000 PEOPLE. THE APPEAL ENSURED THAT INCREASED DENSITIES WERE CONNECTED TO DESIGNATED TRANSIT COMMUNITIES AND IMPROVED BUS SERVICES, THAT NEW CENTERS WERE PRIORITIZED FOR PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLE INVESTMENTS, AND THAT INDUSTRIAL LANDS AND FISH HABITAT WERE PROTECTED FROM LAND USE CHANGES. FUTUREWISE ALSO WON AN APPEAL OF KING COUNTYS WINERIES, BREWERIES, AND DISTILLERIES ORDINANCE THAT WILL PROTECT FARMLAND FROM LAND SPECULATION AND CONVERSION TO TASTING ROOMS AND ENTERTAINMENT VENUES.
