Describe the Organization's Mission:

Part 3 - Line 1

NORTHWEST IMMIGRANT RIGHTS PROJECT PROMOTES JUSTICE BY DEFENDING AND ADVANCING (SEE SCHEDULE O) THE RIGHTS OF IMMIGRANTS THROUGH DIRECT LEGAL SERVICES, SYSTEMIC ADVOCACY, AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

VAWA: THIS PROGRAM ASSISTED SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, TRAFFICKING, SEXUAL ASSAULT, AND OTHER SERIOUS CRIMES, AS THEY PURSUED LEGAL IMMIGRATION STATUS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR SAFETY AND STABILITY.

DETENTION: THIS PROGRAM ASSISTED IMMIGRANTS DETAINED AT THE NORTHWEST DETENTION CENTER IN TACOMA, WASHINGTON WHO FACED DEPORTATION HEARINGS. THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE HELD AT THE NORTHWEST DETENTION CENTER, INCLUDING LONG-TIME UNITED STATES RESIDENTS AND RECENTLY-ARRIVED ASYLUM-SEEKERS, CANNOT AFFORD AN ATTORNEY TO REPRESENT THEM IN DEPORTATION PROCEEDINGS. NORTHWEST IMMIGRANT RIGHTS PROJECT (NWIRP) ASSISTED DETAINED INDIVIDUALS BY PROVIDING THEM GROUP LEGAL ORIENTATION PRESENTATIONS, LEGAL ADVICE, OR DIRECT LEGAL REPRESENTATION IN THEIR DEPORTATION HEARINGS. IN DOING SO, MANY DETAINED INDIVIDUALS WERE RELEASED FROM THE DETENTION CENTER, AND MANY WERE ABLE TO REMAIN IN THE UNITED STATES.

REMOVAL DEFENSE: THIS PROGRAM PROVIDED DIRECT LEGAL REPRESENTATION TO PEOPLE WHO WERE FACING DEPORTATION PROCEEDINGS IN IMMIGRATION COURT. THIS PREVENTED MANY OF THEM FROM BEING DEPORTED FROM THE UNITED STATES AND BEING SEPARATED FROM THEIR FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES.
