YOUTH PROGRAM - KANDELIA'S YOUTH PROGRAMS ARE BASED OUT OF SEATTLE WORLD SCHOOL, A SCHOOL WITHIN THE SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR NEWLY ARRIVED IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE STUDENTS. BY PARTNERING WITH THE SCHOOL, WE PROVIDE CLASSES AND ACTIVITIES THAT HELP STUDENTS ACHIEVE ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND GAIN SKILLS AND CONFIDENCE TOWARDS SELF-SUFFICIENCY AND THEIR GOALS BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL. CLASSES INCLUDE ENGLISH CONVERSATION, HOMEWORK HELP, SOCCER, ART, DANCE, AND MANY OTHERS DEPENDING ON THE INTEREST OF STUDENTS. THESE CLASSES HELP STUDENTS INCREASE ENGLISH PROFICIENCY (OUR STUDENTS ARE ALMOST ALL ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS), LEARN NEW SKILLS, AND BUILD A COMMUNITY OF FRIENDS AND PEERS.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT - KANDELIA'S COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM IS FOCUSED ON BRINGING TOGETHER A NETWORK OF PARTNERS AND SUPPORTERS TO HELP REMOVE BARRIERS TO IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE SUCCESS. THIS PROGRAM ENCOMPASSES OUR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM AND OUR FOOD ACCESS PROGRAM. COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS SUPPORT STUDENTS IN OUR AFTER-SCHOOL CLASSES, AS WELL AS IN OTHER AREAS OF OUR WORK SUCH AS FUNDRAISING AND IN OUR FOOD ACCESS PROGRAM. OUR FOOD ACCESS PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO REMOVE ONE OF THE LARGEST BARRIERS FACING STUDENTS BY PROVIDING RELIABLE FOOD ON A WEEKLY BASIS. GROCERIES ARE TAILORED TO EACH INDIVIDUAL FAMILY IN ORDER TO TAKE IN CONSIDERATION FAMILY SIZE AS WELL AS FOOD PREFERENCES AND NEEDS. ALL FOOD BAGS INCLUDE FRESH PRODUCE, MEATS, PANTRY STAPLES, AND CULTURALLY RELEVANT FOODS.
FAMILY PROGRAM - KANDELIA'S FAMILY PROGRAMS ARE FOCUSED ON PROVIDING WHOLE FAMILY SUPPORT TO HELP FAMILIES THROUGH THE CHALLENGES THEY FACE AS NEWCOMERS. OUR PROGRAMS ARE CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE AND TRAUMA-INFORMED, AND THE EXACT CLASSES WE OFFER VARY BASED ON THE NEEDS OF OUR FAMILIES EACH YEAR. CLASSES INCLUDE ENGLISH CLASSES FOR DIFFERENT LEVELS, COMPUTER CLASSES, SOCIAL CLASSES, SELF SUFFICIENCY CLASSES, AND FOCUS GROUPS. WE ALSO PROVIDE INDIVIDUALIZED CASE MANAGEMENT FOR FAMILIES TO ENSURE WE'RE MEETING THE DYNAMIC AND SHIFTING NEEDS OF FAMILIES, AND CONNECTING THEM WITH TRUSTED PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS WHEN APPLICABLE.
