IN 2022, THE APPEAL PUBLISHED MORE THAN 100 ORIGINAL ARTICLES AND NEWSLETTERS, INCLUDING INVESTIGATIONS, BREAKING NEWS, AND ANALYSIS ON POLICING, PROSECUTION, PUNISHMENT, POLITICS, CRIMINALIZATION, AND ALTERNATIVES TO THE CRIMINAL LEGAL SYSTEM. WE GREW OUR NEWSLETTER TO OVER 10,000 SUBSCRIBERS. WE WON OUR FIRST AWARD FOR INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM AFTER WE UNCOVERED HOW A MAJOR POLICE DEPARTMENT WAS SET UP TO FAIL VICTIMS. OUR COVERAGE OF THE HARM EXPERIENCED BY MARGINALIZED INDIVIDUALS HELPED SECURE A VULNERABLE MAN'S RELEASE FROM STATE PRISON. WE CO-PUBLISHED WITH NEARLY 10 LOCAL OUTLETS. TO PARTNER WITH OUR COMMUNITY, WE REGULARLY WORKED WITH CURRENTLY AND FORMERLY INCARCERATED WRITERS AND SURVEYED OVER 200 READERS TO LEARN HOW WE CAN MEET OUR COMMUNITY'S NEEDS. OUR WORK REACHED MORE THAN 1 MILLION PEOPLE.
