DESIGN MAKE LEARN (DML) OFFERS DESIGN THINKING PROGRAMS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL-AGED STUDENTS IN TWO FORMATS: AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS (20-60 HOUR FORMATS) AND SATURDAY PROGRAMS (20-36 HOUR FORMATS). AFTER COMPLETING EITHER OF THE PROGRAMS, STUDENTS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR A PAID WORK EXPERIENCE WHERE THEY WORK IN PEER TEAMS TO APPLY THEIR NEWLY DEVELOPED DESIGN THINKING SKILLS TO SOLVE A PROBLEM FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES, EARNING A $500 STIPEND UPON COMPLETION OF THEIR PROJECT. DML'S GOAL IS TO RE-ENGAGE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS VIA IN-PERSON HANDS-ON STEAM, DESIGN THINKING AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS. IN ITS FIRST YEAR, DML SERVED 570 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ACROSS 11 LONG BEACH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CAMPUSES.
