GAL/YA CONTRACT AOC PROVIDES ATTORNEYS TO REPRESENT CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE AS GUARDIANS AD LITEM AND YOUTH ATTORNEYS. THESE CHILDREN ARE THE SUBJECT OF ABUSE, NEGLECT, OR ABANDONMENT, AND IN THE CUSTODY OF THE NM CHILDREN, YOUTH, AND FAMILIES DEPARTMENT IN THE SECOND JUDICIAL DISTRICT OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO. CONTRACT ATTORNEYS REPRESENT THE BEST INTEREST AND EXPRESSED WISHES OF THE CHILD CLIENTS DURING THE JUDICIAL PROCESS TO PROTECT THEIR STATUTORY RIGHTS, SAFETY, AND HELP GUIDE A PROPER COURSE OF ACTION. IN 2021, THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDED 14,811 PROFESSIONAL HOURS OF LEGAL REPRESENTATION FOR 488 CHILDREN, AGES 0-18 IN 329 ABUSE & NEGLECT CASES. ADDITIONALLY, THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDED 274 HOURS IN THE NEW FOSTERING CONNECTION PROGRAM, PROVIDING LEGAL REPRESENTATION FOR 49 ELIGIBLE ADULTS AGING OUT OF THE FOSTER CARE SYSTEM.
MENTAL HEALTH CONTRACT PROVIDES ATTORNEYS FOR MENTAL HEALTH ADVISEMENTS UNDER THE NM STATE MENTAL HEALTH CODE TO CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 14 WHO ARE VOLUNTARILY ADMITTED TO A RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT CENTER. CONTRACT ATTORNEYS EVALUATE AND ADVISE CHILDREN AS TO THEIR RIGHTS AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTIONS. IN 2021, THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDED 1,675 PROFESSIONAL HOURS FOR 925 LEGAL ADVISEMENTS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS IN RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT CENTERS UNDER A VOLUNTARY ADMISSION.
THE NM GUARDIANSHIP PROJECT IS A PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES DIRECT LEGAL SERVICES TO LOW INCOME INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES INVOLVED IN LEGAL GUARDIANSHIP AND ADOPTION CASES IN NEW MEXICO. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO PROVIDES INFORMATION, REFERRAL, TRAINING, AND FORMS TO THE PUBLIC BY PHONE, EMAIL, INTERNET, AND IN THEIR OFFICE. ADVOCACY PROVIDES POWERS OF ATTORNEY, CAREGIVER'S AFFIDAVITS, AND FREE NOTARY SERVICE THROUGH THEIR WEB SITE AND THEIR OFFICE DURING REGULAR OFFICE HOURS. IN 2021 ADVOCACY PROVIDED BRIEF LEGAL ASSISTANCE STAFF TIME AND 227 HOURS OF DIRECT LEGAL REPRESENTATION AND ADVICE FOR 103 NEW MEXICO CITIZENS NEEDING ASSISTANCE WITH GUARDIANSHIP, ADOPTION AND OTHER LEGAL ISSUES, AS NEEDED.
