KC TENANTS ORGANIZES TO ENSURE THAT EVERYONE IN KANSAS CITY HAS A SAFE, ACCESSIBLE, AND TRULY AFFORDABLE HOME.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
KC TENANTS ORGANIZES UNIONS IN BUILDINGS AND NEIGHBORHOODS, AND ORGANIZES TENANTS INTO THE CITYWIDE TENANT UNION. OUR ORGANIZING IS PRIMARILY FOCUSED ON BETTERING CONDITIONS FOR TENANTS IN BUILDINGS AND IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS. SOMETIMES OUR ORGANIZING ALSO TAKES A MORE SYSTEMS-LEVEL APPROACH, AND WE RUN CAMPAIGNS TO WIN POLICY, LIKE THE TENANTS RIGHT TO COUNSEL CAMPAIGN WE RAN AND WON IN 2021 THAT GUARANTEES THAT EVERY TENANT FACING AN EVICTION IN KCMO GETS AN ATTORNEY IN COURT.
THE KC TENANTS HOTLINE LAUNCHED IN MARCH 2020, RESPONDING TO THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC AND THE COMMUNITY'S INCREASED DEMAND FOR TENANT RESOURCES. WE BUILT THE HOTLINE TO BE ABLE TO ADEQUATELY RESPOND TO TENANTS REACHING OUT IN A CRISIS. KC TENANTS HOTLINE CALL RESPONDERS REFER TENANTS TO LOCAL LEGAL AND DIRECT SERVICE PROVIDERS, INFORM TENANTS OF THEIR RIGHTS, AND INVITE TENANTS INTO NEIGHBORHOOD UNIONS TO BUILD COMMUNITY POWER. EACH CALLER GETS AT LEAST ONE CALL ATTEMPT TO ADDRESS THEIR HOUSING QUESTION/ISSUE AND INVITE THEM INTO THEIR LOCAL UNION.
