SALT LAKE ACADEMY OF MUSIC (SLAM) IS A PROVIDER OF YOUTH AND ADULT PRIVATE AND GROUP MUSIC INSTRUCTION AND INSTRUMENTS. OUR MISSION IS TO MENTOR YOUTH THROUGH MUSIC INSTRUCTION, PERFORMANCE, AND RECORDING PROGRAMS THAT HELP THEM FIND THEIR CREATIVE VOICE, SHARE THEIR STORIES, AND EFFECT POSITIVE CHANGE IN THEIR LIVES, COMMUNITY, AND BEYOND. BECAUSE WE BELIEVE THAT ALL CHILDREN SHOULD BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT, WE OFFER LESSONS ON A FREE-TO-FEE SLIDING SCALE. SLAMS AWARD-WINNING TEAM OF HIGHLY EXPERIENCED MUSIC EDUCATORS TEACH GUITAR, BASS, PIANO, VOICE, UKULELE, DRUMS, HORNS, STRINGS, AND ELECTRONIC MUSIC THROUGH A VARIETY OF GENRES, INCLUDING ROCK, CLASSICAL, JAZZ, POP, BLUES, BLUEGRASS, FOLK, AND ELECTRONIC MUSIC. OUR YOUTH PROGRAM OFFERS PRIVATE LESSONS, SUMMER CAMPS, GROUP PERFORMANCE PROGRAMS, COMPOSITION AND SONGWRITING, AND RECORDING. OUR ADULT PROGRAM OFFERS PRIVATE LESSONS AND INSTRUCTOR-LED GROUP JAM SESSIONS. IN 2021, OUR SECOND YEAR IN OPERATION, WE REACHED SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES DESPITE DEALING WITH CONTINUING CHALLENGES RELATED TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. WE PROVIDED LESSONS TO 114 INDIVIDUALS (81 YOUTH AND 33 ADULTS) AND AWARDED PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 57 OF OUR CLASSES. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF STUDENTS INCREASED 142% OVER 2020, DURING WHICH WE PROVIDED LESSONS TO 47 INDIVIDUALS (36 YOUTH AND 11 ADULTS) AND AWARDED TWO SCHOLARSHIPS. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH JAZZ DEPARTMENT AND JAZZSLC, A NONPROFIT JAZZ PROMOTER, WE LAUNCHED A FREE ALL-AGES JAZZ JAM SESSION FOR MUSICIANS LED BY UNIVERSITY FACULTY. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SALT LAKE CITY AND SUPERFUZZ, A TECHNOLOGY COMPANY, SLAM LAUNCHED A FREE AND WELL-ATTENDED CONCERT SERIES AT SUGAR HOUSE PARK IN SALT LAKE CITY, FEATURING OUR YOUTH PERFORMANCE PROGRAM STUDENTS. BY THE END OF 2021, SLAMS ROCK PERFORMANCE PROGRAM SERVED EQUAL NUMBERS OF BOYS AND GIRLS, HELPING TO BREAK THE MOLD OF ROCK MUSIC BEING A MALE-DOMINATED MUSIC GENRE. SLAM IS COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCY, EQUITY, DIVERSITY, INCLUSION, AND ENGAGING UNDERSERVED YOUTH IN THE BENEFITS OF MUSIC EDUCATION.
