MUSIC CONCEPTS ARE TAUGHT THROUGH GREAT MASTERPIECES OF THE WESTERN EUROPEAN CHORAL TRADITION, WORLD MUSIC, AFRICAN AMERICAN SPIRITUALS AND THE MOST CHALLENGING CONTEMPORARY PIECES. THESE SACRED AND SECULAR WORKS, SUNG IN MANY LANGUAGES, SERVE AS THE BASIS OF OUR CURRICULUM.YOUNG VOICES OF COLORADO (YVC) PERFORMED IN THREE MAJOR PUBLIC CONCERTS IN THE DENVER METRO AREA WITH AN ATTENDANCE OF 4,201. YVC HOSTS THREE WORKSHOPS FOR ELEMENTARY MUSIC TEACHERS AS OUTREACH ACTIVITIES IN SCHOOLS IN ADAMS, ARAPAHOE AND DOUGLAS COUNTIES REACHING HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS AND COLLABORATES WITH SCFD ACTIVITIES. YVC HAS DEVELOPED SATELLITE PRESCHOOL MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS AT AREA RECREATIONAL CENTERS AND OFFERS FREE TRY-IT CLASSES FOR INTERESTED SINGERS AND PARENTS. YVC COLLABORATES WITH COMMUNITY CHOIRS AND ORCHESTRAS IN CONCERTS AND PERFORMS AT LOCAL EVENTS - WESTERN WELCOME WEEK AND HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING. YVC SERVES 175 SINGERS IN SEVEN CHOIRS FROM KINDERGARTEN TO 12TH GRADE WITH A DIVERSITY RATE OF APPROXIMATELY 40% (CHILDREN OF COLOR, DIFFERENT ABILITITIES, AND GENDER). YVC PROVIDES INSTRUCTION IN 364 CLASSES, REHEARSALS AND CAMPS. YVC AWARDED TUITION SCHOLOARSHIPS TO 35% OF SINGERS. THE YVC ORGANIZATION HAS OVER 30 VOLUNTEERS HELPING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND TOTALING OVER 500 VOLUNTEER HOURS.
YVC BRINGS OVER 400 PEOPLE TO DENVER FOR A WEEK IN JUNE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SING A MILE HIGH INTERNATIONAL CHILDRENS CHOIR FESTIVAL WHICH IS LED BY RENOWNED GUEST CONDUCTORS TO PERFORM AT THE ACOUSTICALLY-ADVANCED NEWMAN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DENVER. THE FESTIVAL PROVIDES RESOURCES FOR CHOIR CONDUCTORS AND ADMINISTATIVE STAFF. YOUTH-CENTERED FUN ACTIVITIES AND COMMUNITY BUILDING ARE HELD DURING THE EVENINGS. IN 2023 EIGHT CHILDRENS CHOIRS (350 PARTICIPANTS) FROM THE UNITED STATES - NEW YORK TO CALIFORNIA ATTENDED THE WEEK-LONG SING A MILE HIGH FESTIVAL. SINCE 2006 (EXCLUDING THE TWO COVID YEARS) THERE HAVE BEEN OVER 5,000 PARTICIPATING SINGERS FROM MORE THAN 120 DIFFERENT CHOIRS! SING A MILE HIGH WELCOMES AND SERVES A DIVERSE POPULATION FROM ACROSS THE US AND ABROAD. THE FESTIVAL HAS EVOLVED BY ADDING YOUTH AND CHANGING VOICES AND BY ACCEPTING SMALL CHOIRS WHICH ARE REBUILDING POST COVID.- FOURTEEN COMMISSIONED WORKS HAVE BEEN WORLD PREMIERED AT THE SING A MILE HIGH FESTIVAL!
