Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
WE HOST A MONTHLY FREE MEAL FOR THE COMMUNITY. THE MEAL ATTRACTS PEOPLE IN OUR AREA WHO ARE IN NEED OF A FRIEND OR A FREE MEAL. OUR GUESTS INCLUDE FOLKS WITH LIMITED PHYSICAL OR MENTAL ABILITY, SENIORS, FAMILIES, SINGLE PARENTS, IMMIGRANTS, AND FOLKS WHO ARE HOMELESS. THE MEAL PROVIDES SUSTENANCE FOR THOSE WHO ARE HUNGRY AS WELL AS SOCIAL CONNECTION, WHICH IS EVEN MORE VALUABLE FOR SOME OF OUR GUESTS. THE MEAL CREATES A NEUTRAL SPACE WHERE PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE COME TOGETHER AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER. CONSISTENT MONTHLY MEALS WERE NOT HELD DURING YEAR DUE TO COVID CONCERNS, PROGRAM WILL BEGIN MONTHLY AGAIN BEGINNING IN SUMMER 2022.
WE HAVE FOUND THAT VISITING FRIENDS IN THEIR HOMES IS A GREAT WAY FOR THEM TO FEEL CONNECTED AND BUILD RELATIONSHIPS, ESPECIALLY IF AGE OR ILLNESS PREVENTS THEM FROM LEAVING THEIR HOME OFTEN. AT LEAST MONTHLY, OUR SILO VOLUNTEERS VISIT A HOME BOUND FRIEND BRINGING A TOKEN GIFT AND HELP ADDRESSES BASIC NEEDS THEY MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ADDRESS THEMSELVES. HELPING PAINT OR DO HOUSEHOLD CHORES MEANS A LOT TO PEOPLE WHO MAY NOT BE ABLE TO DO THE WORK THEMSELVES.
SILO FRIENDS WERE HIT HARD AND FAST BY COVID. SOME GOT SICK, MANY LOST THEIR JOBS AND ALMOST ALL LOST WAGES. WE PURCHASE MEALS TO SUPPORT LOCAL RESTAURANTS AND DELIVER THEM TO FRIENDS QUARANTINED AT HOME. WE DELIVER BAGS OF FOOD, FRESH PRODUCE AND NEEDED RESOURCES (TOILET PAPER). WHILE DELIVERING FOOD AND HYGIENE ITEMS, WE FIND THAT RELATIONAL CONNECTION IS ONE OF THE MOST HOPEFUL THINGS WE BROUGHT TO PEOPLE'S DOORSTEP. THIS DELIVERY MODEL MEANS THE SILO VAN IS PACKED FULL EACH DAY, BUZZING AROUND TOWN DELIVERING FOOD AND SUPPLIES.
IN AN EFFORT TO INCREASE FOOD STABILITY FOR VULNERABLE FRIENDS, SILO CREATED A GARDENING PROGRAM THAT PUT THE SOURCE OF FOOD IN BACKYARDS THROUGHOUT OXFORD. WE BUILT, INSTALLED AND FILLED 135 RAISED VEGETABLE GARDENS IN 50 DIFFERENT BACKYARDS. THESE MINI VEGETABLE GARDENS PROVIDE HEALTHY FOOD FOR 142 PEOPLE, INCLUDING 95 CHILDREN, WHO WEREN'T AFRAID TO GET THEIR HANDS DIRTY TO GROW THEIR OWN FOOD. PARTICIPANTS CHOSE FROM THREE SUMMER VARIETIES: A SALSA GARDEN, A SALAD GARDEN OR A PASTA GARDEN. A FALL PLANTING PROVIDED ADDITIONAL PRODUCE INTO THE COOL MONTHS.
