ENERGY & CLIMATEIN 2021, WLN LAUNCHED A SERIES OF VIRTUAL EVENTS DEDICATED TO CLIMATE ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS FOR OUR NETWORK LEADERS THROUGH THE INTERIOR WEST. SERIES TOPICS INCLUDED FEDERAL FUNDING DEDICATED TO ORPHAN WELL CLEANUP, THE BUILD BACK BETTER LEGISLATION AND ITS CLIMATE BENEFITS FOR WESTERN COMMUNITIES AND THE ROLE INDIGENOUS LEADERS CAN PLAN IN MITIGATING THE CLIMATE CRISIS.ADVANCED COLORADO AND NEW MEXICO RULES TO CUT EMISSIONS. WLN HELPED WIN A VOTE IN THE US SENATE UPHOLDING A BLM RULE TO REDUCE METHANE EMISSIONS. IN 2021, WLN SENT A LETTER URGING SENATORS TO REINSTATE EPA METHANE POLLUTION SAFEGUARDS AND ORGANIZED LEADERS IN COLORADO, NEW MEXICO AND MONTANA TO PARTICPATE IN EPA LISTENING SESSIONS AND SUBMIT PUBLIC COMMENTS SUPPORTING A NEW RULE. ADVOCATED FOR AMERICA THE BEAUTIUL - PROTECTING 30% OF LANDS AND WATERS BY 2030.
MINING LAW REFORMWLN ALSO FOCUSED ON 1872 MINING LAW REFORM, WHICH WAS AN EFFORT TO ENGAGE LOCAL AND TRIBAL ELECTED OFFICIALS WITH FEDERAL DECISION-MAKERS ON THE NEED TO REFORM OUTDATED LEGISLATION TO HOLD HARD ROCK MINING COMPANIES ACCOUNTABLE FOR POLLUTION, RECLAIM ABANDONED MINES AND ESTABLISH A CLEANUP FUND TO PROTECT COMMUNITIES, TRIBES AND LOCAL ECONOMIES FROM THE IMPACTS OF MINE WASTE.
PUBLIC LAND AND WATERWLN DEDICATED EFFORTS IN 2021 TO PROTECT PUBLIC LANDS, WHICH PROVIDE IMPORTANT WILDLIFE HABITAT,AND DECIDED TO EXPAND ITS ISSUE WORK TO INCLUDE SALMON RESTORATION, A SIGNIFCANT ECONOMIC, ENVIRONMENTAL AND CULTURAL ISSUE IN THE INTERIOR WEST STATE OF IDAHO AND THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST REGION. WLN SUPPORTS THE IMPORTANCE OF REMOVING FOUR DAMS ON THE LOWER SNAKE RIVER TO RESTORE NATIVE SALMON POPULATIONS TO THE COLUMBIA RIVER BASIS AND PROTECT CULTURAL TRANDITIONS, STRENGTHEN ECONOMIC SECURITY AND PROMOTE CLEAN ENERGY FOR THE REGION'S TRIBAL COMMUNITIES.
