OVERTURE BAND PROGRAMS PROVIDED BAND PROGRAMS TO (20) PRIVATE AND PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS AND HOMESCHOOL GROUPS IN DANE COUNTY, WI, THAT WOULD OTHERWISE BE UNABLE TO OFFER AND PROVIDE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC EDUCATION TO THEIR STUDENTS. FOUR HUNDRED SEVENTY-THREE (473) STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN OVERTURE'S BAND PROGRAMS FOR THE 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR. OVERTURE BAND PROGRAMS EMPLOYED FOUR FULL-TIME TEACHERS AND ONE PART-TIME TEACHER TO PROVIDE THESE SERVICES. TWENTY-TWO (22) FAMILIES FROM FIFTEEN SCHOOLS RECEIVED A COMBINED TOTAL OF $4,637.50 IN TUITION ASSISTANCE FROM OVERTURE BAND PROGRAMS. MUSIC EDUCATION PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH ACADEMIC AND AESTHETIC EXPERIENCES THAT ENHANCE AND ENRICH THE QUALITY OF THEIR COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION AND THEIR LIVES, AND SERVES AS AN AVENUE FOR CREATIVITY, SELF-AWARENESS, AND SELF-EXPRESSION. MUSIC EDUCATION ALSO INCREASES A STUDENT'S SELF-CONFIDENCE, POSITIVELY INFLUENCES THE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGHER COGNITIVE PROCESSES, AND ENHANCES ONE'S SPATIAL INTELLIGENCE.
OVERTURE BAND PROGRAMS OFFERED ITS STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE INDIVIDUAL MUSIC LESSONS OVER THE SUMMER, THOUGH A FIVE-WEEK SUMMER LESSONS PROGRAM, EITHER VIRTUALLY/ON-LINE OR IN PERSON. THIRTY (30) STUDENTS FROM FOUR PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS EACH RECEIVED FIVE HALF-HOUR, PRIVATE MUSIC LESSONS FROM AN OVERTURE TEACHER THROUGH EITHER AN ON-LINE VIDEO MEETING PLATFORM, OR IN PERSON AT THE SCHOOL. ONE OVERTURE EMPLOYEE WAS THE INSTRUCTOR FOR THIS PROGRAM.
STUDENTS WHO WERE IN 6TH GRADE THROUGH 12TH GRADE WERE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE WISCONSIN SCHOOL MUSIC ASSOCIATION'S DISTRICT SOLO AND & ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL. SIXTY-SEVEN (67) STUDENTS FROM THIRTEEN PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS PREPARED SEVENTY-THREE (73) SOLOS & ENSEMBLES AND PERFORMED THEM FOR AN ADJUDICATOR. EACH STUDENT RECEIVED A RATING AND COMMENTS REGARDING THEIR PERFORMANCE FROM THE ADJUDICATOR. TWO STUDENTS FROM TWO SCHOOLS ADVANCED TO THE STATE LEVEL. SOLO & ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO IMPROVE THEIR MUSIC SKILLS AND TO STRIVE TO REACH A HIGHER LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE, GAINING POISE AND SELF-CONFIDENCE. OVERTURE BAND PROGRAMS OFFERS ITS MORE ADVANCED STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN OVERTURE'S JAZZ BAND AND/OR HONOR BAND. JAZZ BAND AND HONOR BAND ARE AN EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITY THAT PROVIDES THE STUDENTS THAT PARTICIPATE AN EXPANDED MUSIC REPERTOIRE WITH MUSIC THAT IS MORE CHALLENGING (BOTH TECHNICALLY AND MUSICALLY), A LARGER GROUP BAND EXPERIENCE, AND TWO ADDITIONAL PERFORMANCES. TWELVE STUDENTS FROM EIGHT SCHOOLS PARTICIPATED IN JAZZ BAND, AND TWENTY-EIGHT (28) STUDENTS FROM TWELVE SCHOOLS PARTICIPATED IN HONOR BAND. STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE IN THESE GROUPS SHARE WHAT THEY LEARN WITH THEIR PEERS IN THEIR OWN (USUALLY SMALLER) SCHOOL BAND THROUGH THE LEADERSHIP AND MATURITY THEY GAIN FROM THE EXPERIENCE.
