Part 3
BIG BASIN STATE PARK IS MAKING PROGRESS RECOVERING FROM THE CZU FIRE AND THE PANDEMIC. VOLUNTEERS ARE MAKING EFFORTS TO FILL THE POSITIONS/SCHEDULES AVAILABLE AND PARK VISITORS HAVE INCREASED QUITE A BIT. A TRAINING PROGRAM FOR FIRE ECOLOGY IS STILL IN PROGRESS AS THE INTEREST IS HIGH FOR PEOPLE BOTH FROM THIS AREA AND FAR AWAY REGARDING THE IMPACTS OF FIRE AND CLIMATE CHANGE ON THE PARK. SALAMANDER SATURDAY WAS A BIG SUCCESS WITH MANY VISITORS HAPPY TO BE ABLE TO ATTEND EVENTS AT RANCHO DEL OSO AGAIN AFTER THE LONG HIATUS. WE HAD A BANNER WILDFLOWER WEEKEND EVENT WITH SPEAKERS, HIKES AND CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES. FIRE ECOLOGY WAS ON THE FOREFRONT OF VISITORS' MINDS AND IT WAS AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY TO REACH OUT WITH INFORMATION ON THIS SUBJECT. WE LOOK FORWARD TO REINSTITUTING OUR FORMER NATURE EVENTS PLUS MORE. DAVID COLEMAN IS NOW IN THE INTERPRETER 1 POSITION AND WILL BE LEADING FURTHER EFFORTS IN INTERPRETATION TO ENSURE INCLUSIVITY FOR ALL VISITORS AND ACCURACY OF INFORMATION. BECAUSE OF THE HEAVY WINTER RAINS THE TRAILS IN BIG BASIN HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED FURTHER SO RANCHO DEL OSO IS HAVING TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC AND REDIRECT THOSE WHO WANT TO HIKE WHERE THEY'VE ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO HIKE BEFORE THE CHALLENGES OF THE PAST YEARS. THIS WILL BE ONGOING FOR A LONG TIME WHILE WORK IS DONE AND THE ECOLOGY OF THE PARK RECUPERATES. THE WELCOME CENTER IS NOT OPEN YET AS INSIDE IMPROVEMENTS CONTINUE. HOPEFULLY IT WILL OPEN SOMETIME THIS YEAR.
