THE EQUAL JUSTICE CENTER'S MISSION IS TO EMPOWER LOW-INCOME WORKERS, FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITIES SO WORKERS CAN ACHIEVE FAIR TREATMENT IN THE WORKPLACE AND IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM, REGARDLESS OF THEIR IMMIGRATION STATUS. MOST SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES CONSIST OF LEGAL ASSISTANCE AND ADVOCATES FOR LEGAL AND ECONOMIC FAIRNESS FOR LOW-INCOME INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES.

EJCS EMPLOYMENT JUSTICE REPRESENTATION OF LOW-INCOME WORKING PEOPLE HAS BEEN QUITE SUCCESSFUL IN 2023, WE RECOVERED A TOTAL OF $1,016,644 IN EMPLOYMENT JUDGMENTS AND SETTLEMENTS. THIS INCLUDES $694,974 IN UNPAID WAGES AND DAMAGES RECOVERED BY CLIENTS WHO SUFFERED UNPAID WAGES, EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION, WORKPLACE SEXUAL ASSAULT, LABOR TRAFFICKING, AND OTHER EMPLOYMENT VIOLATIONS. EJC ALSO RECOVERED FROM EMPLOYER/DEFENDANTS IN THESE CASES $321,671 IN ATTORNEY FEES WHICH ARE CRITICAL TO SUSTAINING OUR ONGOING LEGAL AID OPERATIONS. MOST IMPORTANTLY OUR CLIENTS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO VINDICATE THEIR DIGNITY BY STANDING UP AGAINST INJUSTICE, ENFORCING RIGHTS THAT BENEFIT ALL WORKERS, AND CHANGING EMPLOYERS EXPLOITATIVE PRACTICES.
A UNIQUELY SPECIALIZED ASPECT OF EJCS EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS LEGAL ASSISTANCE CONSISTS OF ITS LEGAL AID FOR SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT. IN 2023, EJC CONTINUED TO HELP SURVIVORS COMBAT SEXUAL ASSAULT AND SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE, OBTAINING MONETARY AND OTHER LEGAL REMEDIES FOR VICTIMS AND PROVIDING ECONOMIC STABILITY VITAL TO THEIR RECOVERY.
EVERY YEAR, THE EJC ALSO HELPS STRENGTHEN THE LEGAL PROFESSION BY CULTIVATING A NEW GENERATION OF PUBLIC SERVICE LAWYERS THROUGH THE EJCS TRANSNATIONAL WORKER RIGHTS CLINIC AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS LAW SCHOOL.
