Part 3 - Line 1
THE CEC'S MISSION IS TO FOSTER EDUCATION, DIALOGUE AND COLLABORATION ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN THE HOUSTON/GULF COAST REGION.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: THE PROGRAM CONNECTS FORMAL & INFORMAL EDUCATORS IN THE GREATER HOUSTON AREA IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION. BASED ON FEEDBACK FROM EDUCATORS, THEY ARE INTERESTED IN TEACHING STUDENTS ABOUT THE GREATER HOUSTON ENVIRONMENT, YET IT HAS BECOME MORE COMMON TO TEACH ABOUT OTHER ENVIRONMENTS DUE TO A LACK OF LOCAL KNOWLEDGE AND TEACHER MATERIALS. CEC'S ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS SEEK TO PROVIDE RESOURCES RELATED TO HOUSTONS CLIMATE, BAYOUS, WATER AND AIR QUALITY, PRAIRIES AND MORE TO BRIDGE THIS GAP. IN 2021, CEC DISTRIBUTED RESOURCES THROUGH ITS ONLINE RESOURCE DIRECTORY, AND BROUGHT TOGETHER ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATORS FOR COLLABORATION THROUGH A COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE KNOWN AS THE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATORS EXCHANGE (EEE). THE EEE MET BIMONTHLY AND RESULTED IN NEW COLLABORATIONS BEING FORMED, NEW RESOURCES BEING EXCHANGED, AND THE BUILDING OF FELLOWSHIP BETWEEN EDUCATOR PEERS. ADDITIONALLY, CEC IMPLEMENTED GRANT FUNDED PROJECTS RECEIVED IN PREVIOUS YEARS THAT WERE DEFERRED DUE TO COVID. THIS INCLUDED A PROJECT TO CREATE WATERSHED-BASED AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS IN PASADENA, TEACHER TRAINING WORKSHOPS, AND OTHER PARTNERSHIPS WITH EDUCATION PARTNERS. IN ALL, NEARLY 100 EDUCATORS ATTENDED IN-PERSON OR VIRTUAL EDUCATION EVENTS IN 2021.
GREEN FILMS: IN 2021, CEC CONTINUED THE GREEN FILMS PROGRAM, WHICH INCLUDES TWO FESTIVALS--THE WILD & SCENIC FILM FESTIVAL ON TOUR IN THE WINTER AND THE WILD ABOUT HOUSTON GREEN FILM FESTIVAL IN THE FALL AND THE HOUSTON GREEN FILM SERIES, WHICH IS A PERIODIC SCREENING OF A FULL-LENGTH ENVIRONMENTAL FILM FOLLOWED BY A PANEL DISCUSSION. AS IN PREVIOUS YEARS, CEC LEVERAGED THIS PROGRAM TO HIGHLIGHT LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL STORIES, AND FOSTER DIALOGUE WITHIN THE ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNITY IN HOUSTON. OVER 100 PEOPLE ATTENDED CEC FILM EVENTS IN 2021.
OUTREACH: CEC WORKS TO SUPPORT AND PROMOTE THE WORK OF ITS MEMBERS, OVER 100 ORGANIZATIONS THAT DO ENVIRONMENTAL WORK IN THE HOUSTON REGION. THIS INCLUDES SPEAKING AND/OR TABLING AT LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL EVENTS, INVITING MEMBER REPRESENTATIVES TO SPEAK AT CEC EVENTS, AND CONNECTING MEMBER GROUPS WITH OTHERS DOING SIMILAR OR COMPLEMENTARY WORK. CEC ADDITIONALLY PARTICIPATES AS AN ADVISOR OR STAKEHOLDER FOR MULTIPLE LOCAL INITIATIVES, INCLUDING THE COALITION FOR ENVIRONMENT, EQUITY AND RESILIENCE (CEER); HOUSTON CLIMATHON; HARRIS COUNTYS ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE AND RESILIENCY DO-TANK; CITY OF HOUSTONS CLIMATE ACTION PLAN AND RESILIENCE PLAN; EARTHSHARE OF TEXAS; SEVERAL GALVESTON BAY ESTUARY PROGRAM (GBEP) WORKGROUPS, AND HOUSTON-GALVESTON AREA COUNCIL (H-GAC) BACTERIA IMPLEMENTATION GROUP, AMONG OTHERS. CEC ALSO RESPONDS TO REQUESTS FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC, PROVIDING REFERRALS, OPINIONS, AND INFORMATION ON VARIOUS LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL TOPICS, AS REQUESTED.
