THE TENNESSEE MEDICAL ASSOCIATION IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION, WHICH EXISTS PRIMARILY TO FEDERATE AND BRING INTO ONE COMPACT ORGANIZATION, THROUGH THE COMPONENT SOCIETIES, THE MEDICAL PROFESSION OF THE STATE. THE ORGANIZATION ENHANCES THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PHYSICIANS THROUGHOUT THE STATE AND PROTECTS THE HEALTH INTERESTS OF PATIENTS BY DEFINING AND PROMOTING QUALITY, SAFE AND EFFECTIVE MEDICAL CARE, PUBLIC POLICY TO PROTECT THE SANCTITY OF THE PHYSICIAN - PATIENT RELATIONSHIP AND IMPROVE ACCESS TO AND THE AFFORDABILITY OF QUALITY MEDICAL SERVICES, ETHICS AND COMPETENCE IN MEDICAL EDUCATION AND PRACTICE, AND OPEN COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN THE MEDICAL PROFESSION AND THE PUBLIC, FOSTERING A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CAPACITIES OF MEDICAL PRACTICE.

ADVOCACY - TMA CARRIES THE COLLECTIVE VOICE OF PHYSICIANS FROM ACROSS THE STATE ON CAPITOL HILL, WORKING DIRECTLY WITH LAWMAKERS TO INFLUENCE PUBLIC POLICIES AFFECTING THE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE. TMA PROTECTS THE MEDICAL PROFESSION BY RELENTLESSLY PURSUING LAWS THAT IMPROVE PHYSICIANS' EFFECTIVENESS, AND FIGHTING REGULATORY CHANGES THAT JEOPARDIZE THE PHYSICIAN, THE PHYSICIAN-PATIENT RELATIONSHIP, OR ADD ADMINISTRATIVE BURDEN WITHOUT IMPROVING THE DELIVERY OF CARE. TMA ADVOCATES ON BEHALF OF PATIENTS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY, SAFETY, ACCESSIBILITY AND AFFORDABILITY OF MEDICAL CARE IN TENNESSEE.
MEMBERSHIP AND COMMUNICATION - TMA REPRESENTS ALL TENNESSEE DOCTORS AND SUCCESSFULLY INFLUENCES LAWS, RULES AND REGULATIONS THAT DETERMINE HOW HEALTHCARE IS DELIVERED IN TENNESSEE. WE SERVE AROUND 9,000 MEMBERS. TMA ORGANIZES OVER 15 MEETINGS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. TMA HAS A MAGAZINE PUBLISHED FIVE TIMES A YEAR AND AN ANNUAL REPORT.
EDUCATION AND EVENTS - TMA OFFERS A VARIETY OF ONLINE AND IN-PERSON PROGRAMS TO HELP PHYSICIANS FILL CONTINUING EDUCATION GAPS. FROM BRIEF VIDEOS TO LEADERSHIP TRAINING TO A LARGE ANNUAL CONFERENCE, OUR PROPRIETARY CONTENT HELPS TENNESSEE DOCTORS MAINTAIN A PROFESSIONAL LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS, AND IMPROVE THEIR COMPETENCE AND KNOWLEDGE. THOUSANDS OF PHYSICIANS PARTICIPATE IN TMA'S EDUCATION AND EVENTS.
GOVERNANCE AND LEADERSHIP - TMA HOLDS QUARTERLY MEETINGS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO CONDUCT GOVERNANCE, FINANCIAL REVIEWS, BUDGETS, RESOLUTIONS, MEMBERSHIP OPERATIONS AND STRATEGIC PLANNING FOR THE ASSOCIATION. TMA SENDS DELEGATES TO TWO AMA MEETINGS EACH YEAR. TMA DELEGATES REVIEW RELEVANT RESOLUTIONS TO ENSURE TMA'S POSITION ON RESOLUTIONS. TMA'S PRESIDENT IS THE OFFICIAL SPOKESPERSON WITH MEDIA, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND OTHER ENTITIES. SPECIALTY SERVICES - TMA PROVIDES ADMINISTRATIVE AND EXECUTIVE SERVICES FOR ELEVEN SPECIAL SOCIETIES IN THE STATE OF TENNESSEE INCLUDING RADIOLOGY, OPHTHALMOLOGY, INTERNAL MEDICINE, EMERGENCY, DERMATOLOGY, ALONG WITH INDEPENDENT MEDICINE'S POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE AND TMA PHYSICIAN SERVICES, INC. TOGETHER THESE SPECIAL SOCIETIES HAVE THOUSANDS OF MEMBERS WHO CAN ALSO BE MEMBERS OF TMA.
