Part 3 - Line 4a

THE CRITICAL RECEPTION AND READER RESPONSE TO OUR 2021 TITLES WAS VERY POSITIVE, WITH REVIEWS IN THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE WASHINGTON POST, HARPER'S MAGAZINE, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES, WORLD LITERATURE TODAY, THE TLS, AMONG OTHER PUBLICATIONS. OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR WE PUBLISHED ACROBAT BY NABANEETA DEV SEN, TRANSLATED FROM BENGALI BY NANDANA DEV SEN (INDIA); EVERYTHING LIKE BEFORE BY KJELL ASKILDSEN, TRANSLATED FROM NORWEGIAN BY SEAN KINSELLA (NORWAY); JUAN HORMIGA BY GUSTAVO ROLDAN, TRANSLATED FROM SPANISH BY ROBERT CROLL (CATALONIA/ARGENTINA); KIN BY MILJENKO JERGOVIC, TRANSLATED FROM CROATIAN BY RUSSELL SCOTT VALENTINO (CROATIA/SERBIA); ENNEMONDE BY JEAN GIONO, TRANSLATED FROM THE FRENCH BY JODY GLADDING (FRANCE); THE DOG OF TITHWAL BY SAADAT HASAN MANTO, TRANSLATED FROM URDU BY KHALID HASAN, AATISH TASEER, AND MUHAMMAD UMAR MEMON (PAKISTAN/INDIA); A GUARDIAN ANGEL RECALLS, BY W.F. HERMANS, TRANSLATED FROM DUTCH BY MARTIN AITKEN (NETHERLANDS); MILONGAS BY EDGARDO COZARINSKY, TRANSLATED FROM SPANISH BY VALERIE MILES (ARGENTINA); AUTUMN ROUNDS BY JACQUES POULIN, TRANSLATED FROM FRENCH BY SHEILA FISCHMAN (QUEBEC), AN IMPOSSIBLE LOVE BY CHRISTINE ANGOT, TRANSLATED FROM THE FRENCH BY ARMINE KOTIN MORTIMER (FRANCE). WE REPRINTED FOUR TITLES: BLINDING BY MIRCEA CARTARESCU, TRANSLATED BY SEAN COTTER; SELECTED PROSE OF HEINRICH VON KLEIST, TRANSLATED BY PETER WORTSMAN; WHY DID YOU LEAVE THE HORSE ALONE? BY MAHMOUD DARWISH, TRANSLATED FROM ARABIC BY JEFFREY SACKS; AND THE FIRST WIFE BY PAULINA CHIZIANE, TRANSLATED FROM PORTUGUESE BY DAVID BROOKSHAW (MOZAMBIQUE). FOR EACH BOOK ARCHIPELAGO PUBLISHED IN 2021, WE PRINTED 250-450 ADVANCE REVIEW COPIES TO SEND TO REVIEWERS, EDITORS, BOOKSELLERS, WRITERS, BLOGGERS, READING GROUPS, AND LIBRARIANS. WE TAILORED THESE LISTS TO EACH BOOK, ENSURING THAT EVERY BOOK HAD A CHANCE TO REACH THOSE WHO WERE MOST LIKELY TO DISCUSS, WRITE ABOUT, SELL, AND PROMOTE IT. WE ALSO SOLICITED ENDORSEMENTS FOR EVERY BOOK, HANDPICKING WRITERS WHOSE NAMES WERE MOST RELEVANT TO THE AUDIENCE WE BELIEVED THE BOOK WOULD APPEAL TO MOST. OUR MARKETING BUDGET ALSO INCLUDED THE PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION OF 9000 PRINT CATALOGS. OUR TITLES SAW A GREAT DEAL OF CRITICAL SUCCESS THIS YEAR, WITH REVIEWS IN NPR, THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, THE WASHINGTON POST, RECEIVING STARRED REVIEWS IN PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY AND KIRKUS REVIEWS. WE WERE DELIGHTED TO LEARN THAT IN THE MEADOW OF FANTASIES WAS AWARDED THE ALA'S BATCHELDER HONOR FOR INTERNATIONAL PICTURE BOOKS. JUAN HORMIGA WAS NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF 2021 BY NPR, WITH JUANITA GILES CALLING IT A "JEWEL OF A BOOK, AND THE PASTOR WAS NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF 2021 BY PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY. BOYD TONKIN PRAISED THE DOG OF TITHWAL FOR ITS "AGILE SWIFTNESS AND UNDERSTATED POIGNANCY" IN THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, AND PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY ASSERTED THAT "A GUARDIAN ANGEL RECALLS SHOULD ESTABLISH HERMANS AS A MODERN DOSTOYEVSKY." THIS YEAR OUR AUTHORS AND TRANSLATORS WERE AWARDED A VARIETY OF WELL-DESERVED HONORS: GEOFFREY BROCK WON THE 2021 NATIONAL TRANSLATION AWARD IN POETRY FOR HIS LUMINOUS TRANSLATION OF ALLEGRIA AND SCHOLASTIQUE MUKASONGA WAS AWARDED THE SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR PRIZE FOR WOMEN'S FREEDOM. TRANSLATOR DAVID COLMER ALSO RECEIVED THE JAMES BROCKWAY PRIZE FOR HIS STUNNING TRANSLATIONS FROM THE DUTCH. 2021 WAS A CHALLENGING YEAR FOR THE PRESS, AS IT WAS FOR SO MANY ARTISTS, LITERARY ORGANIZATIONS, AND CULTURAL CENTERS. PRINTING AND PAPER COSTS ROSE, WHICH HAS A DIRECT IMPACT ON HOW MANY BOOKS WE ARE ABLE TO REPRINT AND OUR CASH-FLOW REALITIES. ALTHOUGH WE ARE STILL FEELING THE EFFECTS OF THE PANDEMIC, WE ARE DOING EVERYTHING WE CAN TO FUNDRAISE CREATIVELY AND ENERGETICALLY, AND TO PLACE OUR BOOKS IN THE HANDS OF A WIDE ARRAY OF READERS. OUR MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM CONTINUES TO GROW AND WE CONTINUE TO SEEK NEW CONTRIBUTORS AND PARTNERS.
