SINCE 2005, THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF GREATER WINTER HAVEN HAS ASSISTED COMMUNITY AGENCIES THAT HAVE A ONE TIME NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS. THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF GREATER WINTER HAVEN'S DONE IN A SNAP PROJECT ENABLES THE LEAGUE TO ASSIST COMMUNITY AGENCIES WHICH MAY HAVE A ONE TIME NEED TO STAFF A HALF-DAY, ONE-DAY OR TWO-DAY SPECIAL EVENT. ALL VOLUNTEER REQUESTS MUST BE FOR COMMUNITY-BASED, HANDS ON OPPORTUNITIES THAT WILL HAVE AN IMPACT ON WOMEN, CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS IN THE GREATER WINTER HAVEN AREA. THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF GREATER WINTER HAVEN OFFERS GRANTS TO INNOVATIVE TEACHERS IN THE GREATER WINTER HAVEN AREA. THERE ARE TWO ROUNDS OF GRANTS (FALL AND SPRING), WHICH ARE AVAILABLE FOR PROJECTS WITH BUDGETS OF 50 TO 250. WINNING PROJECTS FROM THE PAST HAVE INCLUDED HIGH-QUALITY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCES, CREATIVE CLASSROOM EXPERIENCES, FILLING THE GAPS WHERE NEEDED RESOURCES ARE NOT PROVIDED BY SCHOOL BUDGETS AND SUPPLIES AND TOOLS TO ENHANCE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT. THE MOBILE FOOD BUS IS A PROJECT THAT THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF GREATER WINTER HAVEN, INC. LEADS IN THE FIGHT TO END HUNGER IN OUR COMMUNITY. BY PROVIDING NUTRITIOUS FOOD BY WAY OF A MOBILE BUS AND DISTRIBUTING IT TO FOUR DIFFERENT HIGH NEEDS AREAS WITHIN POLK COUNTY WE ARE ABLE TO FEED 800 FAMILIES PER YEAR. THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF GREATER WINTER HAVEN, INC. AWARDS THE SILVER TASSEL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS TO HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS OF GREATER WINTER HAVEN IN RECOGNITION OF OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEER EFFORTS. EACH YEAR, WE HONOR A MEMBER OF OUR COMMUNITY FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEER EFFORTS WITH A GOLDEN GLOVES AWARD. KIDS IN THE KITCHEN IS A PROJECT THAT PROMOTES CHILD HEALTH AND WELLNESS BY PROVIDING LESSONS AND DEMONSTRATIONS RELATED TO THE PREPARATION OF HEALTHY MEALS AND SNACKS THAT ARE TASTY, EASY TO PREPARE AND AFFORDABLE. THESE MATERIALS INCLUDE LEARNING EXERCISES FOR KIDS, TIPS ON NUTRITION, RECIPES FOR MEALS AND SNACKS. KIDS IN THE KITCHEN ADDRESSES THE GROWING PROBLEM FACING TODAYS CHILDREN WITH THE NUMBER OF OVERWEIGHT CHILDREN INCREASING AND CHILDREN'S RISK FOR HEALTH PROBLEMS ALSO INCREASING DUE TO POOR EATING HABITS. THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF GREATER WINTER HAVEN, INC. WILL BE PARTNERING WITH GIRLS, INC. OF WINTER HAVEN AND HOSTING A KIDS IN THE KITCHEN SESSION ONCE A MONTH WITH THEIR AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM. THE LEAGUE WILL ALSO BE OUT IN THE COMMUNITY HOSTING KIDS IN THE KITCHEN ACTIVITIES THROUGH THE YEAR.
