THE HUNGER AND HEALTH COALITION RELIEVES POVERTY AND HUNGER FOR HOUSEHOLDS EXPERIENCING ECONOMIC HARDSHIP AND FOOD INSECURITY. WE SERVE LOW-INCOME AND UNINSURED RESIDENTS OF AVERY, WATAUGA, AND ASHE COUNTIES WHO ARE FORCED TO CHOOSE BETWEEN PAYING RENT, BUYING GROCERIES, AND AFFORDING THEIR MEDICATION. SINCE 1982, WE HAVE CARRIED OUT OUR MISSION OF PROVIDING COMPASSIONATE SUPPORT TO OUR COMMUNITY'S WORKING CLASS, SENIORS, INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES, UNHOUSED, AND OTHER MARGINALIZED RESIDENTS. TODAY, WE ARE ONE OF THE FOREMOST NONPROFITS ADDRESSING THE EFFECTS OF POVERTY IN OUR REGION BY LEADING INNOVATIVE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS TO PERMANENTLY REDUCE POVERTY IN WATAUGA COUNTY AND ITS SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES.

PANTRY: OUR PANTRY'S GOAL IS TO OVERCOME THE STEREOTYPE THAT FOOD PANTRY ITEMS ARE OF POOR QUALITY AND ARE UNHEALTHY BY PROVIDING NUTRITIOUS FOOD ACCESS TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE. BY UTILIZING FOOD DONATIONS FROM OVER 20 LOCAL BUSINESSES COMBINED WITH WHOLESALE FOOD PURCHASES, WE PROVIDE 60-70 POUNDS OF BI-WEEKLY FOOD SUPPORT TO MORE THAN 4,000 HOUSEHOLDS. OUR FOOD ASSISTANCE PROVIDES A BALANCED MIX OF NON=PERISHABLES, FRESH PRODUCE, FROZEN PROTEINS, AND READY-TO-EAT MEALS TO ALLOW FAMILITES TO MEET THEIR NUTRITION NEEDS.
PHARMACY: THE HUNGER AND HEALTH COALITION OPERATES OUR AREA'S ONLY NOMINAL COST PHARMACY, AND PROVIDES LIFE-SUSTAINING CHRONIC ILLNESS MEDICATION TO 700-900 UNINSURED INDIVIDUALS EACH YEAR. CLIENTS WITHOUT INSURANCE CAN HAVE THEIR PRESCRIPTIONS SENT TO OUR PHARMACY TEAM TO BE FILLED, CREATING ACCESS TO COST-PROHIBITIVE MEDICATION LIKE INSULIN AND INHALERS. OUR PHARMACY PROVIDES LIFE-SUSTAINING MEDICATION AND OFFERS APPROXIMATELY $310,000 IN MEDICATION RETAIL VALUE TO OUR COMMUNITY'S LOW-INCOME MEMBERS EACH YEAR.
