THE ARC OF BUNCOMBE COUNTY EXISTS TO EMPOWER CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOMENTAL DISABILITIES TO REALIZE THEIR HIGHEST POTENTIAL THROUGH ADVOCACY, EDUCATION, PROGRAMS AND FAMILY SUPPORT.

THE ARC OF BUNCOMBE COUNTY PROVIDES EIGHT MAIN AREAS OF SERVICE TO PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES. THESE PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO SUPPORT SELF-SUFFICIENCY, EMPOWER, AND HELP WITH TOOLS AND RESOURCES TO SUPPORT THE FUTURE. CRISIS INTERVENTION AND ADVOCACY PROGRAM - HAS SUPPORTED OVER 600 FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS WITH RENT, MORTGAGE PAYMENTS, EMERGENCY HOUSING, UTILITIES, TRANSPORTATION, MEDICAL, LEGAL, EDUCATION SUPPORT AND HOME REPAIRS IN BUNCOMBE AND SURROUNDING COUNTIES. THE HOUSING PROGRAM HELPS TO DEFER EVICTION, SECURE SAFE HOUSING, AND MOVE TO HOUSING TO ELIMINATE SHELTER STAYS. THESE ARE CONSIDERED LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCIES WHICH ARE INCREASINGLY MORE DIFFICULT FOR FAMILIES WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES. OUR CRISIS PROGRAM ALSO PROVIDES REFERRAL TO SPECIALIZED BUDGETING CLASSES, CLIENT SERVICES, AND CASE MANAGEMENT. WE HAVE SUPPORTED 246 CLIENTS WITH OUR ADVOCACY PROGRAM.


OTHER SERVICES INCLUDE TRANSIENT SERVICES FOR FOOD, CLOTHING, VEHICLE GAS, CLOTHING, LODGING AND SUPPLIES. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS NOT LIMITED TO CHILDCARE (RESPITE), TAXES, INSURANCE PAYMENTS, FEES, LEGAL SERVICES, FUNERAL EXPENSES AND MOVING ETC. REACHING 160 CLIENTS. - SPECIALIZED EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT WAS PROVIDED TO THOSE IN NEED OF TECHNOLOGY, TUTORING AND MENTORING AND SPECIALIZED SCHOOL SUPPLIES. THIS WAS PROVIDED BY VIRTUAL AND IN PERSON ASSISTANCE AND WERE PROVIDED YEAR-ROUND. -OPERATION SANTA 2021 - SUPPORTED 260 GIFTS ALONG WITH 60 GIFT CARDS FOR MEALS AND OTHER NEEDED REQUESTS. REQUESTS INCLUDED STAPLES THAT FAMILIES AND CHILDREN NEEDED.


-HEALTH & WELLNESS - PRESENTED YOGA, MINDFULNESS, AND HEALTHY LIVING TO OVER 150 STUDENTS IN A CLASS SETTING WITH A FEW HEALTHY LIVING SESSIONS IN THE HOME SETTING. THIS PROGRAM HELPED WITH CALMING ANXIETY AFTER THE PANDEMIC. -SUMMER CAMP AND SOCIAL ENRICHMENT - SPECIALIZED CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS WERE PROVIDED TO 30 CLIENTS THAT INCLUDED OVERNIGHT AND DAY PROGRAMS. - THE WINGS FOR AUTISM/ALL PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO ALLEVIATE SOME OF THE STRESS THAT FAMILIES WHO HAVE A CHILD WITH AUTISM OR OTHER INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY EXPERIENCE WHEN TRAVELING BY AIR. WE WERE UNABLE TO PROVIDE THIS PROGRAM IN PERSON DUE TO THE PANDEMIC AND AIRPORT RENOVATIONS. - FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME DISORDER (FASO) AWARENESS PROGRAM - WAS PRESENTED VIRTUALLY AND IN PERSON TO AGENCY AND SCHOOL STAFF THAT WORK WITH DISABILITIES. RADIO PROGRAMS, BILLBOARDS, POSTERS, AND NEWSPAPER ARTICLES WERE PROVIDED THROUGHOUT BUNCOMBE COUNTY AND SURROUNDING AREAS. THE MESSAGE WAS PRESENTED TO COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. BILLBOARDS WERE ON I-40 AND I-26 AND OTHER ROADS. REFERRALS WERE MADE AND SUPPORTED FOR DIAGNOSIS AND TO SUPPORT THE NEEDS OF DIAGNOSED INDIVIDUALS. THE ARC MADE SOME REFERRALS FOR GENETIC TESTING.
