SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS - SAJA IS COMMITTED TO PROMOTING HIGH-QUALITY JOURNALISM. SAJA SCHOLARSHIPS ASSIST IN HELPING JOURNALISM STUDENTS MEET A PORTION OF THEIR TUITION FEES AND OTHER COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH STUDYING AT UNIVERSITIES IN NORTH AMERICA. UNDERGRADUATES AND GRADUATE STUDENTS CONTINUING THEIR STUDIES AT A UNIVERSITY IN THE U.S. OR CANADA CAN APPLY. APPLICANTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO BE SAJA MEMBERS. ALL APPLICANTS MUST SHOW PROOF OF ENROLLMENT. APPLICANTS MUST EITHER BE OF SOUTH ASIAN DESCENT (INCLUDES: AFGHANISTAN, BANGLADESH, BHUTAN, INDIA, MALDIVES, NEPAL, PAKISTAN, SRI LANKA, AND PEOPLE OF SOUTH ASIAN ORIGIN FROM THE CARIBBEAN) OR DEMONSTRATE AN INTEREST IN COVERING SOUTH ASIA AND/OR THE DIASPORA. IMMEDIATE RELATIVES OF SAJA BOARD MEMBERS AND JUDGES ARE INELIGIBLE TO APPLY.
GENERAL PROGRAM - SAJA JOURNALISM AWARDS RECOGNIZE AND HONOR EXCELLENCE IN REPORTING UNDER A RANGE OF CATEGORIES. IN 2023, THE AWARD CATEGORIES WERE: (1) THE DANIEL PEARL AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING REPORTING ABOUT SOUTH ASIA (ESTABLISHED IN HONOR OF WALL STREET JOURNAL REPORTER DANIEL PEARL, WHO WAS KILLED WHILE REPORTING IN PAKISTAN, THIS AWARD RECOGNIZES OUTSTANDING INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING THAT EXHIBITS COURAGE AND EXPOSES IMPORTANT PUBLIC ISSUES.) (2) OUTSTANDING BUSINESS STORY ABOUT SOUTH ASIA, OR THE WORLDWIDE SOUTH ASIAN DIASPORA (3) OUTSTANDING ARTS, CULTURE, AND LIFESTYLE REPORTING ABOUT SOUTH ASIA, OR THE WORLDWIDE SOUTH ASIAN DIASPORA (4) OUTSTANDING BREAKING NEWS REPORTING ABOUT SOUTH ASIA, OR THE WORLDWIDE SOUTH ASIAN DIASPORA (5) OUTSTANDING INTERNATIONAL REPORTING ON ANY SUBJECT BY A SOUTH ASIAN JOURNALIST PRIMARILY CONDUCTED OUTSIDE OF THE U.S. OR CANADA AND (6) OUTSTANDING STORY ON ANY SUBJECT BY A SOUTH ASIAN STUDENT IN THE U.S. OR CANADA. NOMINATIONS FOR THESE AWARDS ARE COLLECTED DURING THE FALL AND THE WINNERS ARE SELECTED BY A PANEL OF JUDGES ASSEMBLED BY THE BOARD OF SAJA.
