TO PROVIDE A NETWORKING AND RESOURCE FORUM FOR JOURNALISTS OF SOUTH ASIAN ORIGIN OR INTERESTED IN SOUTH ASIA OR SOUTH ASIAN DIASPORA AND ACTING AS A RESOURCE TO FACILITATE/PROMOTE ACCURATE AND QUALITY COVERAGE OF SOUTH ASIA AND SOUTH ASIANS IN NORTH AMERICA.

SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS - SAJA SCHOLARSHIPS ENABLES STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE THE NECESSARY EDUCATION TO MEET HIGH JOURNALISTIC STANDARDS. SCHOLARSHIP AWARD IS USUALLY $2,000 PER CANDIDATE AND THE TOTAL AMOUNT PER YEAR HAS GENERALLY BEEN APPROXIMATELY $20,000. UNDERGRADUATES AND GRADUATE STUDENTS CAN APPLY FOR FUNDING FOR THEIR EDUCATIONAL EXPENSES. ALL APPLICANTS MUST SHOW PROOF OF ADMISSION TO A NORTH AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION. APPLICANTS MUST EITHER BE OF SOUTH ASIAN DESCENT (INCLUDES: AFGHANISTAN, BANGLADESH, BHUTAN, INDIA, MALDIVES, NEPAL, PAKISTAN, SRI LANKA) OR DEMONSTRATE A KEEN INTEREST IN COVERING SOUTH ASIA AND/OR THE DIASPORA.


GENERAL PROGRAM (ANNUAL MEETING AND OTHER EVENTS) - SAJA HOLDS AN ANNUAL AWARDS EVENT (USUALLY IN NEW YORK OR WASHINGTON, DC; VIA ZOOM IN RECENT YEARS) AT WHICH OUTSTANDING WORK IN JOURNALISM RELATED TO SOUTH ASIA IS RECOGNIZED BY AWARDS TO JOURNALISTS IN VARIOUS CATEGORIES. THE EVENTS HAVE RANGED FROM A SINGLE-EVENING TO TWO-DAYS OF SEMINARS, PANEL DISCUSSIONS AND WORKSHOPS. THE EXPENDITURES OF THE EVENT HAVE RANGED, BASED ON THE COST OF RENTING A VENUE AND THE COST OF A DINNER FOR THE ATTENDEES. IN ADDITION TO THE ANNUAL EVENT, IN PRE-COVID YEARS, SAJA ORGANIZES SMALLER "CHAPTER" EVENTS, TO OFFER NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES AND TO FEATURE SPEAKERS ON TOPICS RELATED TO JOURNALISM / SOUTH ASIA(NS).
