THE PURPOSE OF THE FRIENDS OF THE NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY (FNPL) IS TO ORGANIZE, ENCOURAGE AND STRENGTHEN PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR THE NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY AND TO ENRICH THE TOTAL RESOURCES AND FACILITIES OF THE LIBRARY. THE FNPL ENCOURAGES THE CITIZENS OF NORFOLK AND ITS SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES TO ENJOY BOOKS AND RELATED MEDIA AND TO USE THE PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED BY: AWARENESS THROUGH NEWSLETTERS AND SOCIAL MEDIA FUNDRAISING THROUGH BOOK SALES AND EVENTS PROGRAMS SUPPORTING READING FOR ALL AGE LEVELS ADVOCACY FOR NPL AND THE INDIVIDUAL BRANCHES

THE FNPL PROVIDES ONGOING SUPPORT ON AN ANNUAL BASIS FOR THE NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY TO ACCOMPLISH ITS MISSION. THE FRIENDS OF THE NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY (FNPL) RAISES FUNDS TO SUPPORT NPL PROGRAMS AND SPECIAL EVENTS, PURCHASE BOOKS, MATERIALS AND SUPPORTING EQUIPMENT AND HELP FUND OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES OF THE NPL BRANCH LIBRARIES. ALL FNPL ACTIVITIES ARE PRICED TO BREAK EVEN (IN CASES OF FNPL MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT) OR TO MAKE INCOME TO ALLOW FOR DIRECT DONATION TO THE LIBRARY FOR PROGRAMS, BOOKS AND RELATED MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT. AS A RESULT OF MEMBERSHIP DUES, DONATIONS AND INCOME FROM GRANTS AND BEQUESTS, MORE THAN 54,000 WAS CONTRIBUTED DIRECTLY TO NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN 2021. THESE DONATIONS FINANCIALLY SUPPORTED THE NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY'S SUMMER READING PROGRAM FOR YOUTH AND ADULTS, RECOGNITION OF THE LIBRARY STAFF, ADVOCACY TO BRING BACK THE LIBRARIES, AND A CONTRIBUTION TO ESTABLISH A MAKER'S STUDIO AT A NPL BRANCH.
THE FRIENDS OF THE NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY (FNPL) PROVIDES SUPPORT FOR THE NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARIES TO HELP PROMOTE LITERACY AND LIBRARY USAGE. THE FRIENDS OF THE NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY ARE ENTIRELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONDUCT OF THE ANNUAL BOOK REVIEW CONTEST. IN 2021, EVEN WITH THE HALLENGES PRESENTED BY THE PANDEMIC, MORE THAN 700 STUDENTS FROM NORFOLK PUBLIC, PRIVATE AND HOMESCHOOLERS SUBMITTED BOOK REVIEWS FOR JUDGING. THE FNPL DONATES FUNDS FOR ACTIVITIES PLANNED AND CONDUCTED BY THE NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARIES STAFF IN A SUMMER READING PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS. IN 2021 ALMOST 3,000 PARTICIPANTS REGISTERED TO PARTICIPATE ONLINE (LIBRARY ACCESS WAS LIMITED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC) AND OVER 1,000 FREE BOOKS WERE DISTRIBUTED TO PARTICIPANTS.
THE FRIENDS OF THE NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY (FNPL) TO FURTHER PROMOTE LITERACY INITIATED THE LITTLE FREE LIBRARY THROUGHOUT THE CITY OF NORFOLK. IN 2021 FNPL SUPPORTED MORE THAN 90 LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES IN THEIR STEWARDS.
