THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF EDUCATION (NAED)/SPENCER POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM SUPPORTS EARLY-CAREER SCHOLARS WORKING IN CRITICAL AREAS OF EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP. FELLOWS RECEIVE $70,000 IN FUNDING, ATTEND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RETREATS, AND RECEIVE MENTORSHIP FROM NAED MEMBERS AND OTHER SENIOR SCHOLARS IN THEIR FIELD. THIS FELLOWSHIP IS NONRESIDENTIAL,AND APPLICATIONS FROM ALL DISCIPLINES ARE ENCOURAGED.
THE NAED/SPENCER DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM SEEKS TO ENCOURAGE A NEW GENERATION OF SCHOLARS FROM A WIDE RANGE OF DISCIPLINES AND PROFESSIONAL FIELDS TO UNDERTAKE RESEARCH RELEVANT TO THE IMPROVEMENT OF EDUCATION. THESE $27,500 FELLOWSHIPS SUPPORT INDIVIDUALS WHOSE DISSERTATIONS SHOW POTENTIAL FOR BRINGING FRESH AND CONSTRUCTIVE PERSPECTIVES TO THE HISTORY, THEORY, OR PRACTICE OF FORMAL OR INFORMAL EDUCATION ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. FELLOWS ALSO ATTEND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RETREATS AND RECEIVE MENTORSHIP FROM NAED MEMBERS AND OTHER SENIOR SCHOLARS IN THEIR FIELD.
CIVIC REASONING AND DISCOURSE IS AN INITIATIVE TO IMPROVE STUDENTS' LEARNING IN CIVIC REASONING, DEBATE, AND DISCOURSE BY ENSURING THAT THE PEDAGOGY, CURRICULUM, AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS THAT THEY EXPERIENCE ARE INFORMED BY THE BEST AVAILABLE EVIDENCE. THE PROJECT INCLUDES COMMISSIONED PAPERS, A SUMMARY REPORT, AND PRACTITIONER BRIEFS THAT PROVIDE A SYNTHESIS OF FINDINGS AS WELL AS ACTIONABLE GUIDANCE FOR POLICY MAKERS AND PRACTITIONERS.
THE EVALUATING AND IMPROVING TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAM AIMS TO IDENTIFY BEST PRACTICES AMONG EXISTING MODELS OF EVALUATION TOOLS AND PROVIDE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW APPROACHES. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF AN INTERDISCIPLINARY STEERING COMMITTEE OF RESEARCHERS AND PRACTITIONERS IN TEACHER EDUCATION, THE PROJECT OUTCOMES WILL BE MADE APPLICABLE AND ACCESSIBLE TO DIFFERENT STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STATE AND FEDERAL AGENCIES, TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAMS, PRACTITIONERS, AND RESEARCHERS. THIS INITIATIVE WILL PRODUCE: (1) RE-PUBLICATION OF A PREVIOUS REPORT ON TEACHER EDUCATION AS AN EXPANDABLE WEBSITE; (2) A COMMISSIONED PAPER SERIES ON KEY ASPECTS OF TEACHER PREPARATION AND INSTRUCTIONAL QUALITY; AND (3) A PEER-REVIEWED CONSENSUS STUDY THAT IDENTIFIES BEST PRACTICES AND PROVIDES RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DEVELOPING NEW MODELS OF TEACHER PREPARATION EVALUATION AND IMPROVEMENT.
