SINCE ITS PREDECESSORS FOUNDING IN 2000, ARUNDEL RIVERS HAS INSTALLED NEARLY 100 PROJECTS TO FILTER STORMWATER AND RESTORE AND PROTECT ERODING STREAMS AND SHORELINES. PROJECTS HAVE INCLUDED INNOVATIVE, MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR STREAM RESTORATIONS, FLOODPLAIN RECONNECTIONS, LIVING SHORELINES, WETLANDS CREATIONS, BIORETENTION PONDS, AND RAIN GARDENS. THESE PROJECTS SLOW DOWN AND FILTER STORMWATER AND ALLEVIATE NUTRIENT AND SEDIMENT POLLUTION TO OUR TIDAL RIVERS.
THE SOUTH, WEST, AND RHODE RIVERKEEPER IS A NON-GOVERNMENTAL ADVOCATE FOR OUR RIVERS. THE RIVERKEEPER PATROLS THE SOUTH, WEST, AND RHODE RIVERS SEARCHING FOR SOURCES OF POLLUTION, RESTORATION OPPORTUNITIES, AND VIOLATIONS OF ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS. THE RIVERKEEPER MONITORS THE HEALTH OF THE SOUTH, WEST, AND RHODE RIVERS BY SAMPLING WATER QUALITY AT OVER 40 LOCATIONS DURING THE SUMMER AND FALL. THE RIVERKEEPER ALSO EDUCATES COMMUNITIES ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS AND OVERSEES THE MARINE SEWAGE PUMP OUT BOAT PROGRAM.
ARUNDEL RIVERS ENGAGES VOLUNTEERS TO MONITOR BACTERIA LEVELS IN THE WATER AT OVER A DOZEN COMMUNITY WATERFRONT LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER IN AN EFFORT TO IDENTIFY AREAS THAT ARE UNSAFE FOR SWIMMING. THE MONITORING DATA ARE PROVIDED WEEKLY TO THE IMPACTED COMMUNITIES AND DISSEMINATED THROUGH OUR SOCIAL MEDIA NETWORKS.
