Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
SINCE ITS PREDECESSORS FOUNDING IN 2000, THE FEDERATION HAS INSTALLED OVER 90 PROJECTS TO FILTER THE STORMWATER POURING OFF INTENSELY SUBURBANIZED LAND. THE PROJECTS HAVE INCLUDED INNOVATIVE MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR STREAM RESTORATIONS, FLOODPLAIN RECONNECTIONS, LIVING SHORELINES, WETLAND CREATIONS, STORMWATER BIORETENTION PONDS, AND RAIN GARDENS. THE FEDERATIONS STREAM RESTORATION PROJECTS AIM TO SLOW DOWN AND FILTER THE STORMWATER, THUS PREVENTING A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THE DIRT AND EXCESS NUTRIENTS FROM REACHING THE TIDAL CREEKS. WE SLOW DOWN THE WATER BY EITHER TEMPORARILY STORING IT IN UNDERGROUND STORMWATER VAULTS OR IN A SERIES OF STEP POOLS THAT SLOWLY RELEASE THE WATER OVER TIME. THE FEDERATION SHORELINE STABILIZATION PROJECTS REPLACE EXISTING STONE RIP-RAP WALLS AND WOODEN BULKHEADS WITH NATURAL LIVING SHORELINE. THESE PROJECTS ARE A NATURAL ALTERNATIVE TO ARMORING A SHORELINE. CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O
OUR RIVERKEEPER IS A NON-GOVERNMENTAL ADVOCATE FOR OUR RIVERS. THE RIVERKEEPER PATROLS THE SOUTH, WEST, AND RHODE RIVERS TO LOOK FOR SOURCES OF POLLUTION, CRITICAL AREA VIOLATIONS, AND OTHER ILLEGAL ACTIVITY, WHICH CAN HARM OUR ENVIRONMENT. OUR RIVERKEEPER LEADS OUR EFFORTS TO MONITOR THE HEALTH OF THE SOUTH, WEST, AND RHODE RIVERS AT OVER 40 STATIONS TO ASSESS THEIR HEALTH AND HELP FOCUS OUR RESOURCES AND RESTORATION EFFORTS INTO OUR MOST POLLUTED CREEKS. IN ADDITION, OUR RIVERKEEPER PRESENTS THE STATE OF THE RIVERS ANNUALLY AND OVERSEES OUR MARINE SEWAGE PUMP OUT BOAT PROGRAM.
DURING THE SUMMER, THE FEDERATION, WITH ASSISTANCE FORM VOLUNTEERS, MONITORS THE BACTERIA LEVELS AT VARIOUS COMMUNITY WATERFRONT AND RESTORATION AREAS TO IDENTIFY AREAS THAT MAY BE UNSAFE FOR SWIMMING. WE PROVIDE WEEKLY PUBLIC HEALTH INFORMATION TO PARTICIPATING COMMUNITIES, POST THE RESULTS ON OUR WEBSITE, AND HELP IDENTIFY TIMES WHEN IT MAY BE INADVISABLE TO SWIM. KNOWLEDGE IS KEY IN OUR FIGHT FOR HEALTHIER, CLEAN WATERS. CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O
