TO PROVIDE READING AND WRITING INSTRUCTION TO RACINE COUNTY RESIDENTS THROUGH THE USE OF TRAINED VOLUNTEER TUTORS.

BASIC LITERACY - THE LACK OF BASIC LITERACY SKILLS HAS PROVEN TO CONTRIBUTE TO LOWER PAYING JOBS, CRIME, LACK OF CIVIC AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT, AND LOW SELF-ESTEEM. OUR BASIC LITERACY PROGRAM CATERS TO STUDENTS WITH LOW LITERACY SKILLS IN READING, WRITING, AND MATH. THIS CURRICULUM IS A STUDENT-CENTERED PROGRAM THAT CATERS TO ADULTS. OUR PROGRAM INCLUDES A VARIETY OF LEVELS, FROM READING AND WRITING FOR BEGINNERS TO GED TEST PREP. ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER - COMMUNICATING IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IS ESSENTIAL FOR SUCCESS IN THE UNITED STATES. WE HAVE DESIGNED AN ELL PROGRAM TO ASSIST ADULTS IN SPEAKING, UNDERSTANDING, READING, AND WRITING ENGLISH. ELL STUDENTS COME TO THE RLC SEEKING TO IMPROVE THEIR ENGLISH AT WORK, COMMUNICATE BETTER IN THE SCHOOLS OF THEIR CHILDREN, AND BE BETTER ADVOCATES FOR THEMSELVES IN THE COMMUNITY. IN ADDITION TO TUTORING, ELL STUDENTS CAN PARTICIPATE IN ADDITIONAL CONVERSATION OR COMPUTER CLASSES. ELIGIBLE STUDENTS MAY CHOOSE TO TAKE THE CITIZENSHIP CLASS, OFFERED 3-4X A YEAR. ALL ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS CURRENTLY SCHEDULED INCLUDE GED PREP CLASSES, WRITTEN DRIVER'S LICENSE / COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE TEST TUTORING, HEALTH LITERACY, FINANCIAL LITERACY, MICROSOFT OFFICE FOR BEGINNERS (EXCEL, WORD, POWERPOINT), AND BASIC COMPUTER LITERACY.
