Part 3 - Line 4a
LAND PURCHASE: FUNDS DONATED TO NATURE MATES TO ASSIST IN THE PURCHASE OF A 4-ACRE PLOT OF PLANTATION LAND INSIDE THE FORESTS OF SOUTH NILAMBUR IN THE SOUTHERN INDIAN STATE OF KERALA. THIS PROJECT IS CRITICAL FOR THE SURVIVAL OF 340+ ELEPHANTS IN THIS REGION WHO CAN ROAM SAFELY AND FREELY BETWEEN FOREST PATCHES. LAND ENCROACHMENT IS RAMPANT ACROSS INDIA THAT HOUSES 18% OF THE WORLD'S HUMAN POPULATION, WITH 80% OF THEIR HABITAT NOW BEING SHARED WITH HUMANS. BECAUSE OF THE KERALA STATE GOVERNMENT'S INTERVENTION VFAES WAS ABLE TO NEGOTIATE WITH THE OWNERS AND HELPED BUY 4-ACRES OF LAND, RATHER THAN THE 2-ACRES FOR WHICH THE FUNDS WERE RAISED
FOOD & WATER FOR ODISHA'S DISTRAUGHT ELEPHANTS . THE PROJECT'S GOAL IS TO ENSURE AVAILABILITY OF SUFFICIENT FODDER AND WATER IN CORE ELEPHANT HABITATS/ CORRIDORS IN THE CENTRAL INDIAN STATE OF ODISHA BY GROWING NURSERIES OF ELEPHANT FAVOURED PLANTS, AND MONITORING THEM UNTIL MATURITY, WHILE ALSO CREATING WATER BODIES IN CORE FORESTS. MORE THAN 200 TRIBAL PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TRAINED AND EMPLOYED, CREATING JOB OPPORTUNITIES AND SUSTAINABLE HUMAN COMMUNITIES. THIS WILL REDUCE HUMAN-ELEPHANT CONFLICT, FOSTERING COMPASSION FOR ELEPHANTS AND HARMONIOUS COEXISTENCE. WITH RAMPANT ENCROACHMENT, EXACERBATED BY CLIMATE CHANGE, ELEPHANTS ARE LOSING THEIR HABITATS AND ENTERING VILLAGES, INTENSIFYING HUMAN ELEPHANT CONFLICT. IN THE LONG-TERM VFAE PLANS TO BUY LAND FOR REWILDING IN ODISHA.
ANIMAL WELFARE. VFAES PROVIDED CARE FOR ONE ELEPHANT (ANEESHA) WHO NEED MEDICAL ATTENTION AND A COURT CASE WAS BROUGHT AGAINST A TEMPLE FOR VIOLATING ANIMAL WELFARE LAWS.
