THE CENTER WAS FORMED TO AID IMMIGRANTS IN THE UNITED STATES WHO MAY BE FACING PREJUDICE, POSSESS LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH AND LACK AWARENESS OF EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES. THE CENTER HAS CREATED THREE CATEGORIES OF PROGRAMS: EDUCATION, ORGANIZATION, AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TO ASSIST THE IMMIGRANT COMMUNTITY.

WORKER CENTER: WE ASSIST DAY LABORERS IN OBTAINING JOBS THAT ARE SAFE AND WITH DIGNIFIED WAGES WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. WE TRAIN IMMIGRANT WORKERS ON OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY SUCH AS PROVIDING CERTIFIED OSHA 10 AND 30 INSTRUCTION. WE PROVIDE LEGAL ASSISTANCE TO WORKERS FACING WAGE THEFT, WORKPLACE ACCIDENTS AND DISCRIMINATION. WE HELP IMMIGRANT WORKERS INCUBATE WORKER OWNED COOPERATIVE BUSINESSES.
CULTURAL ORGANIZING: THROUGH THE WORK OF L'UNICORNS, FOLKLORIC DANCES ARE PRESERVED AND PASSED DOWN TO YOUNGER GENERATIONS. ADDITIONALLY, LA COLMENA'S NEWLY FORMED FOLKLORICO DANCE GROUP COMPOSED OF YOUNG CHILDREN, ADDS TO THE ELEVATION AND CELEBRATION OF THEIR MEXICAN HERITAGE.LA COLMENA IS THE HOST SITE OF RADIO JORNALERA NEW YORK, THE ONLY RADIO STATION DEDICATED TO HIGHLIGHTING THE VOICE AND ISSUES OF DAY LABORERS IN NEW YORK, RUN BY AND FOR THE DAY LABORER COMMUNITY. RADIO JORNALERA NY IS PART OF A NATIONAL NETWORK OF RADIO STATIONS DEDICATED TO SUPPORTING DAY LABORERS.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT: THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT COMMITTEE SEEKS TO EMPOWER YOUNG PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH ORGANIZING, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND VOLUNTEERISM. WE ASSIST WITH DACA APPLICATIONS/RENEWALS, COLLEGE READINESS WORKSHOPS AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES. THE LUNICORNS COMMITTEE IS THE FIRST LATINX LGTBQIA GROUP ON STATEN ISLAND AND IT HAS CREATED A SPACE FOR ORIENTATION, LEGAL SUPPORT, AND COMMUNITY BUILDING FOR LGBTQIA LATINX IMMIGRANTS. THE ALLIES COMMITTEE WAS DEVELOPED TO CREATE A BRIDGE WITH THE NON IMMIGRANT COMMUNITY ON STATEN ISLAND AND IT WORKS TO FIGHT STEREOTYPES AND DEVELOP LONG-TERM BONDS AMONG COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN STATEN ISLAND NEIGHBORHOODS. WE RESPOND TO THE DYNAMIC CHALLENGES FACING THE IMMIGRANT COMMUNITY AND ADDRESS THEIR NEEDS THROUGH THESE COMMITTEES AND OTHER FORMS OF DIRECT OUTREACH.
