CONSULTANCY AS EDUCTATION/PROGRAM DIRECTORS FOR CHILDREN FOR CHANGE, A NONPROFIT SERVICE LEARNING INITIATIVE FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES K-8. OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS, PSEADS STAFF PROVIDED ORIGINAL CURRICULUM AND PROGRAM DESIGN, AND INSTRUCTION AND FACILITATION OF IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMMING, HELPING BRING THE ORGANIZATION FROM A STUDENT CLUB TO AN INTEGRATED IN-SCHOOL ELECTIVE AND PROGRAM. CHILDREN FOR CHANGE AIMS TO PREPARE YOUNG STUDENTS AND FAMILIES TO PARTICIPATE IN LEARNING ABOUT AND HELPING TO ADDRESS CRITICAL ISSUES IN THEIR COMMUNITIES, INCLUDING THROUGH PARTNERSHIP AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES WITH 30+ LOCAL NONPROFITS AND LOCAL LEADERS.
LAUNCHED YEAR TWO OF HOPE ON THE RIZE, A WRITING A WRITING AND MEDIA-CREATION INITIATIVE FOR STUDENTS IN GRADE 5-COLLEGE. YEAR TWO INCLUDED MORE THAN 1,100 STUDENTS FROM FOUR BAY AREA SCHOOL DISTRICTS, AND RESULTED IN 750 STUDENT FILMS. HOPE ON THE RIZE COMBINES LITERACY, WRITING, SCIENCE, SOCIAL JUSTICE, AND DIGITAL MEDIA TO ADVANCE CRITICAL/CREATIVE THINKING AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING, AND TO ENLARGE PATHWAYS FOR STUDENT SELF-EXPRESSION, COMMUNITY BUILDING AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS. IN COLLABORATION WITH A GLOBAL TREE PLANTING INITIATIVE, AND INSPIRED BY THE LEGACY OF PSEADS MENTORS DEDAN GILLS AND BELVIE ROOKS, PSEADS PLANTED A TREE FOR EVERY COMPLETED FILM.
DESIGNED AND IMPLEMENTED THE EIGHTH YEAR OF THE PSEADS BLUE SKIES, BRIGHT STAR POETRY & SCIENCE PROGRAM. IN COLLABORATION WITH CLASSROOM TEACHERS, THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES A 6-WEEK OR 8-WEEK EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 2-5 THAT INTEGRATES THE HUMANIZING POWER OF POETRY AND AND THE JOY AND ACUITY OF SCIENCE TO EXPLORE THE ROOTS OF HUMAN CURIOSITY, CREATIVITY, STORYTELLING, AND INNOVATION. THE PROGRAM INCLUDED 1,200 STUDENTS THIS YEAR, ACROSS THREE SCHOOL DISTRICTS, AND HAS HELPED SET NEW BENCHMARKS FOR EQUITY, ACHIEVEMENT, ASSET-BASED LEARNING, ART-SCIENCE INTEGRATION, AND COMMUNITY-BUILDING. STUDENTS STRUGGLING WITH SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT AND LITERACY HAVE FOUND UNEXPECTED SUCCESS IN THIS PROGRAM, WHICH SEEKS TO CELEBRATE THE UNIQUE VOICE AND TALENTS OF EVERY LEARNER.
