GLOBAL ASSESSMENT ON COVID AND THE ESSENTIAL SERVICES PROGRAM: PURSUANT TO A CONTRACT WITH UN WOMEN MAIN OFFICE IN NYC, GRW CONDUCTED A REVIEW OF PUBLICATIONS AND CARRIED OUT INTERVIEWS WITH STAKEHOLDERS AROUND THE WORLD TO ASSESS HOW THE UN'S PROGRAM TO DELIVER ESSENTIAL SERVICES TO SURVIVORS IS ADAPTED DURING COVID. GRW WORKED WITH UNFPA AND UN WOMEN ON THIS PAPER. THIS REPORT IDENTIFIES GAPS AND CHALLENGES, AND MAKES RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A POST-COVID-19 RESPONSE TO VAWG.
SAFETY AND JUSTICE REFORM IN THE REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA: GRW CONTINUES OUR WORK WITH PARTNERS IN GEORGIA AS WE ANALYZE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RISK ASSESSMENT TOOL WE DEVELOPED TOGETHER IN 2017-2018. WE WILL BE EVALUATING SERVICE DELIVERY OF THE STATE-RUN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER SYSTEM. PLANNED TRAVEL TO GEORGIA IN AUGUST WAS CANCELED DUE TO HIGH LEVELS OF COVID-19 AND OUR TEAM CONDUCTED MEETINGS AND INTERVIEWS ON ZOOM. WE ARE TRAVELING TO GEORGIA IN MAY 2022.
MINNEAPOLIS POLICE DEPARTMENT (MPD): THIS PROJECT IS WORKING TO IDENTIFY AND UNDERSTAND THE GAPS IN THE MINNEAPOLIS POLICE DEPARTMENT'S RESPONSE TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES AND COMMUNITIES OF COLOR. WE CONTINUE OUR TEXT ANALYSIS OF 150 POLICE REPORTS TO IDENTIFY PATTERNS IN THE POLICE RESPONSE TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CALLS AND INTERVIEWING STAKEHOLDERS. WE HAVE CONDUCTED VIRTUAL INTERVIEWS WITH NUMEROUS STAKEHOLDERS, RANGING FROM PROSECUTORS, DEPUTIES, WOMEN'S RIGHTS ADVOCATES, SUPPORT SERVICE PROFESSIONALS, AND MORE. WE CONDUCTED FOCUS GROUPS WITH SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE WHO ENGAGED WITH THE MPD.
LAW REVIEW AND ANALYSIS FOR SE ASIA IN COLLABORATION WITH UN WOMEN IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC ISLANDS REGION, GRW PROVIDED LEGAL COMMENTARY FOR THREE COUNTRIES: PHILIPPINES, THAILAND, VIETNAM. WE CONDUCTED AN ANALYSIS OF THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE LAW. WE DRAFTED RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A FOCUS GROUP OF SURVIVORS TO GIVE INPUT ON AMENDMENTS TO THE LAW. GRW REVIEWED DRAFT GUIDELINES FOR STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES ON VAWG. THE GUIDELINES WILL BE USED BY GOVERNMENTS THROUGHOUT THE ASSOCIATION OF SOUTHEAST ASIAN NATIONS. PARTNERSHIP WITH UN WOMEN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC GRW PARTNERED WITH THE UN WOMEN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC REGIONAL OFFICE. ONE OF THE GOALS OF THE CONTRACTS WAS TO BUILD THE CAPACITY OF STAKEHOLDERS TO CARRY OUT THE ESSENTIAL SERVICES PACKAGE (ESP) DEVELOPED BY UN WOMEN. GRW HAS WORKED WITH UN WOMEN SINCE 2014 TO CREATE AND CARRY OUT THE ESP. GLOBAL RIGHTS FOR WOMEN MET WITH 12 COUNTRY OFFICES TO UNDERSTAND AND IDENTIFY NEEDS FOR ASSISTANCE AND SUPPORT OF THEIR INITIATIVES AND PROJECTS. GRW STAFF HAVE PRESENTED MULTIPLE WORKSHOPS, CONSULTATIONS, AND TRAININGS ONLINE TO STAKEHOLDERS THROUGHOUT ASIA-PACIFIC. GRW FINALIZED COMMENTARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE LAW IN VIETNAM. WE WILL CONTINUE OUR WORK IN MAY 2022 TO IMPLEMENT THE PROSECUTOR'S TRAINING PACKAGE AND TO CONDUCT PILOT TRAININGS FOR PROSECUTORS AND STAKEHOLDERS ON SEXUAL ASSAULT AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN VIETNAM. HAITI ANALYSIS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ESSENTIAL SERVICES FOR VICTIMS OF VAWG GRW WORKED ON AN ANALYSIS OF THE ESSENTIAL SERVICES AVAILABLE FOR SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN HAITI. WE PREPARED A GROUP OF LOCAL DATA COLLECTORS TO INTERVIEW INSTITUTIONS IN 7 DEPARTMENTS (GEOGRAPHIC REGIONS) OF THE COUNTRY. THIS PROJECT INVOLVED INTERVIEWING KEY INFORMANTS AND HOSTING FOCUS GROUPS WITH SURVIVORS. GLOBAL TREATY ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS GRW'S WORK CONTINUES ON THE GLOBAL VAWG TREATY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NGO, EVERY WOMAN TREATY (EWT). THE FIRST DRAFT OF A PROPOSED TREATY WAS PUBLISHED. GRW'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, AND CONSULTANT, LEAD THIS WORK AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE TREATY DRAFTING AND THE OUTREACH TO INDIVIDUAL GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES AROUND THE WORLD (INCLUDING THE US) SEEKING SUPPORT FOR THE TREATY. PATHWAYS TO FAMILY PEACE (PTFP) OUR DIRECT-SERVICE PROGRAM, PATHWAYS TO FAMILY PEACE, IS A BEHAVIOR CHANGE PROGRAM FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OFFENDERS. GRW FACILITATES FOUR REMOTE PROGRAMS FOR MEN, AND IN RESPONSE TO INCREASING DEMAND, WE WILL ADD A WOMEN'S GROUP STARTING IN 2022. MOST OF OUR PARTICIPANTS ARE COURT-ORDERED TO ATTEND. WE ALSO PROVIDED TRAININGS LOCALLY, NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY ON FACILITATING MEN'S NONVIOLENCE PROGRAMS USING VIDEO CONFERENCE SOFTWARE. THESE TRAININGS HAVE MADE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OVER 95 CHILDREN AND 75 SURVIVORS OVER THE COURSE OF THIS PROGRAM. VALIANT VOICES GLOBAL RIGHTS FOR WOMEN LAUNCHED VALIANT VOICES IN 2021, A VIRTUAL CONVERSATION SERIES TO DISCUSS GENDER BASED VIOLENCE THROUGH THE STORIES AND VOICES OF SURVIVORS AND HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCATES. WE HOSTED FIVE CONVERSATIONS WITH HUNDREDS OF PARTICIPANTS FROM OVER 30 COUNTRIES, SHARING GRW THOUGHT-LEADERSHIP AND ADDRESSING HARMFUL GENDER NORMS. GRW AT THE VIRTUAL PODIUM OUR STAFF HAVE BEEN IN HIGH DEMAND AS EXPERT SPEAKERS ON VARIOUS TOPICS RELATED TO OUR MISSION. LISTED HERE ARE SEVERAL OF OUR SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS: WE PRESENTED AT A PANEL HOSTED BY THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THAILAND AND THE UNITED NATIONS CRIME AND JUSTICE COMMISSION ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF STRONG CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS THAT ADDRESS VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN. GRW STAFF WAS A PLENARY SPEAKER AT A NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON REMOTE BIPS FOR THE NEW MEXICO COALITION AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. WE ALSO PRESENTED AT THE UN WOMEN'S HIGH LEVEL SESSION ON GENDER-RESPONSIVE POLICING FOR THE GENERATION EQUALITY FORUM IN PARIS IN JULY 2021 VIA ZOOM. WE PRESENTED ON GRW'S CONTRIBUTION TO AN INTERNATIONAL POLICE MANUAL. ALSO IN JULY 2021, WE WERE INVITED AS AN EXPERT TO THE 'EXPERT CONSULTATION: ACCESS TO JUSTICE FOR SURVIVORS OF GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN COMPLEX SITUATIONS'' EVENT HELD AT THE HAGUE AND WASHINGTON, DC VIA ZOOM. IN JULY, GRW PRESENTED REMOTELY TO A COALITION OF WOMEN'S RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS IN THE MIDDLE EAST, LAST MILE FOR DEVELOPMENT, ON THE TOPIC OF DEVELOPING AND PASSING LAWS ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS.
