Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
VETERANS LEGAL INSTITUTE CONTINUES TO BE ONE THE FEW PUBLIC INTEREST LAW FIRMS IN THE NATION DEDICATED WHOLLY TO HOMELESS, DISABLED, AND LOW INCOME VETERANS. MILITARY SERVICE CHANGES A LIFE FOREVER. VETERANS USE THE POWER OF FREE LEGAL AID TO CHANGE THEIR LIVES, RESTORE HOPE, AND TO HEAL. WITH THE ONGOING SUPPORT OF COMPASSIONATE AND COURAGEOUS DONORS, VLI CONTINUES TO ADD CRITICAL STAFF, TO MENTOR AND TRAIN DOZENS OF LAW STUDENTS, AND TO EXPAND ITS PRO BONO ATTORNEY NETWORK. IN PURSUIT OF HOLISTIC CARE, VLI CONTINUES TO BE CREATIVE IN DELIVERING FREE LEGAL AID THROUGH VIRTUAL CLINICS, PROACTIVE OUTREACH, AND CAREFULLY NAVIGATING IN PERSON SUPPORT WHENEVER HEALTH AND SAFETY ALLOWS. FREE LEGAL AID HAS CONTINUED WITHOUT INTERRUPTION, AND VETERANS EXPRESS THEIR GRATITUDE DAILY -- MANY WITH THE SENTIMENT THAT HAVING ACCESS JUSTICE MEANT THE WORLD TO THEM -- ALLOWING THEM THE CHANCE TO FACE ANOTHER DAY AND TAKE THE NEXT STEPS TO BUILDING A BRIGHTER FUTURE.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
IN 2023, VLI SECURED OVER $2.9 MILLION IN BENEFIT AWARDS FOR DISABLED VETERANS, INCLUDING OVER $165,000 IN MONTHLY COMPENSATION, AND RECEIVED BETWEEN 200-400 APPLICATIONS PER MONTH FOR LEGAL SERVICES. MOST IMPORTANTLY, VLI IS A PRO BONO LAW FIRM, WHICH MEANS THAT THE VETERANS SERVED NEVER NEED TO WORRY ABOUT RECEIVING A BILL FOR VLI'S LIFE-CHANGING SERVICES. IN OUR HOUSING DEPARTMENT, VLI PREVENTED EVICTIONS IN 54% OF UNLAWFUL DETAINER CASES THROUGHOUT 2023. ADDITIONALLY, OUR DISCHARGE UPGRADE TEAM ACHIEVED AN 86% SUCCESS RATE COMPARED TO 10% CHANCE FOR AN UNREPRESENTED VETERAN. A SUCCESSFUL DISCHARGE UPGRADE CAN CONNECT A VETERAN WITH ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE AND EDUCATION, BUT ALSO RESTORES THE HONOR AND DIGNITY OF THAT VETERAN'S SERVICE. VLI'S FAMILY LAW DEPARTMENT CONTINUES TO ADVOCATE FOR VETERAN FAMILIES AND CHILDREN, WHILE THE ESTATE PLANNING TEAM SETS THOSE FAMILIES UP FOR LONG-TERM STABILITY. VLI LOOKS FORWARD TO CONTINUING TO SERVE THE VETERAN COMMUNITY IN 2024.
