SNAP STRETCH PROGRAM HAS CONTINUED TO RECEIVE FEDERAL PROGRAM DOLLAR SUPPORT OVER THE COURSE OF THE PANDEMIC AND THERE IS INTEREST TO SEE THIS PROGRAM CONTINUE TO EXPAND BY STATE LEVEL ORGANIZATION PARTNERSHIPS. THIS PROGRAM, WHICH DOUBLES OR TRIPLES EBT/SNAP FORMERLY KNOWN AS FOOD STAMPS EXPENDED 489,000 IN STRETCH DOLLARS- MORE THAN DOUBLE WHAT WERE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE IN 2020- WHILE CAPTURING 497,000 IN FEDERAL FOOD ASSISTANCE IN THE LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM EQUATING TO 1,674,888 IN ECONOMIC IMPACT.
THE WEST VIRGINIA FOOD FARM COALITION, WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY EXTENSION SNAP EDUCATION AND FAMILY NUTRITION PROGRAM AND MCDOWELL COUNTY YOUTH PRODUCERS ASSOCIATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH RECONNECTING MCDOWELL OPERATED ITS SECOND SEASON OF A MOBILE FARMERS MARKET. THIS MARKET, THE GO GROWCERY MARKET, MADE STOPS IN APPROXIMATELY 20 DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES AROUND MCDOWELL COUNTY AND 2 IN WYOMING COUNTY ON A TWO-WEEK CYCLE. LOCAL PRODUCE WAS PURCHASED AND AGGREGATED FROM THE SURROUNDING AREAS PRODUCERS TO SELL FROM THE MOBILE COLD TRAILER THAT IS PARKED AT SENIOR CNETERS IN THE NETWORK OF MCDOWELL COUNTY COMMISSION ON AGING, COMMUNITY CENTERS, DOWNTOWN RECREATIONAL AREAS, AND AT OTHER PUBLIC SPACES. THE GO GROWCERY MARKET PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE POPULATIONS IN THESE COMMUNITIES TO SHOP WITH SENIOR PROGRAM VOUCHERS, WIC, SNAP/EBT AND TO STRETCH THEIR SAVINGS BY DOUBLING OR TRIPLING THEIR SNAP DOLLARS TO SPEND ON THIS FRESH LOCAL PRODUCE WITH SNAP STRETCH.
THE FOODSHED DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM IN ITS THIRD YEAR WAS ABLE TO START REAL IMPLEMENTATION AND CHANGE IN THE 17 COUNTIES SERVED BY FIVE STAFF MEMBERS AFTER INCEPTION TWO YEARS PREVIOUSLY.
