TO UNDERSTAND THE BIOTIC PROCESSES THAT UNDERLIE AND MAINTAIN THE DIVERSITY OF LIFE WORLDWIDE, ESPECIALLY IN THE TROPICS, AND TO USE THIS KNOWLEDGE TO ADDRESS GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL AND SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGES.

SUPPORTING CONSERVATION SCIENCE IN AFRICA: CARN SUPPORTS SCIENCE IN CENTRAL AFRICA BY PROVIDING SMALL GRANTS TO AFRICAN SCIENTISTS AND SUPPORTING LOGISTICS FOR SCIENTISTS WORKING COUNTRY. IN 2022 WE PROVIDED 32 GRANTS TOTALING $152,207 TO YOUNG AFRICAN RESEARCHERS. WE ALSO PROVIDED RENT PAYMENT SUPPORT FOR AN ORGANIZATION THAT PROVIDES HOUSING TO SCIENTISTS VISITING CAMEROON TO ADDRESS BUDGET SHORTFALLS DUE TO COVID 19 AND TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS.


CONSERVATION GENETICS: CARN SUPPORTED NUMEROUS PROJECTS TO USE ADVANCED GENETICS TECHNIQUES TO UNDERSTAND AND PRESERVE SPECIES. WE SUPPORTED WORK ON PANGOLINS, THE WORLDS MOST TRAFFICKED MAMMAL THAT ELUCIDATED ROUTES OF PANGOLIN TRAFFICKING FROM AFRICA TO ASIA USING THE DNA ISOLATED FROM PANGOLIN SCALES CONFISCATED IN HONG KONG. WE ALSO SUPPORT WORK TO USE ENVIRONMENTAL DNA TO BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT ANIMALS HAVE BEEN PRESENT IN RWANDA OVER TIME. THAT WORK TRAINED DOZENS OF STUDENTS AND CONSERVATIONISTS FROM THROUGHOUT AFRICA ON THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF EDNA. THAT DATA IS BEING ANALYZED AND PREPARED FOR PUBLICATION.


EAR: CARN SUPPORTED THE EPICENTER FOR ACTION RESEARCH IN THEIR MISSION TO PAIR STUDENT TEAMS WITH REAL WORLD PROBLEMS TO HARNESS THE POWER OF YOUTH AND ACADEMIA TO ADDRESS PRESSING ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES.
