DOCTORS FOR AMERICA WAS ORGANIZED TO MOBILIZE DOCTORS AND MEDICAL STUDENTS TO BE LEADERS IN PUTTING PATIENTS OVER POLITICS ON THE PRESSING ISSUES OF THE DAY TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF OUR PATIENTS, COMMUNITIES, AND NATION.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
DRUG AFFORDABILITY: DUE TO THE INTERRUPTION OF WORK BECAUSE OF THE COVID PANDEMIC, THE DRUG AFFORDABILITY ACTION TEAM'S (DAAT) NATIONAL STEERING COMMITTEE RECEIVED AN EXTENSION TO WORK ON GRANT DELIVERABLES THROUGH THE END OF 2021. MEMBERS UNITED TO EDUCATE THEIR LEGISLATORS ON THE NECESSITY OF ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE PRESCRIPTION DRUGS. IN ADDITION, THE GROUP WORKED ON ADDRESSING THE MANY HEALTH DISPARITIES BROUGHT TO LIGHT DURING THE PANDEMIC INCLUDING ACCESS AND AFFORDABILITY TO COVID-19 THERAPEUTICS AND VACCINES. THE DAAT FOCUSED ON SHARING POWERFUL STORIES THROUGH VIDEOS, BLOGPOSTS AND SOCIAL MEDIA TO INFORM THE DFA MEMBERSHIP, THE PUBLIC AND POLICYMAKERS ON THE TREMENDOUS UNMET NEEDS OF PATIENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
COVID RECOVERY: THE COVID RECOVERY COMMITTEE SUPPORTED PHYSICIAN-LED PHONE BANKS FOR VACCINE-RELATED OUTREACH. IN ADDITION TO CREATING A COMPREHENSIVE AND UPDATED COVID TOOLKIT WHICH HAS BEEN SHARED BY MANY ORGANIZATIONS, ALONG WITH HOSTING A VARIETY OF WEBINARS HIGHLIGHTING VACCINE-RELATED CONCERNS, SUCH AS VACCINE HESITANCY AND HEALTH EQUITY. IN COLLABORATION WITH THE MADE TO SAVE ORGANIZATION, THIS GROUP CREATED A VACCINE EXPERT CORPS - WHERE DFA MEMBERS COULD SIGN UP TO ASSIST WITH VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON EDUCATION WITH COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATIONS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THE GOAL WAS TO BETTER EDUCATE THE VACCINE HESITANT POPULATION BY PROVIDING ACCESS TO A PHYSICIAN AS PART OF THE CONVERSATION.
GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION: DFA CONTINUES TO ENGAGE MEMBERS ON GVP IN TERMS OF ADVOCACY OPPORTUNITIES AROUND GV POLICY AND PROVIDE A RANGE OF OPTIONS FOR THEIR ENGAGEMENT. SAFE STORAGE IS A SUBJECT THAT ALMOST EVERY PHYSICIAN AND MEDICAL STUDENT THINKS IS IMPORTANT TO BE ABLE TO TALK ABOUT WITH THEIR PATIENTS. IN 2022, DFA MEMBERS ORGANIZED A 4-HOUR TRAINING FOR PHYSICIANS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SAFE STORAGE. OTHER POLICIES THAT MEMBERS ADVOCATED FOR WAS THE IMPLEMENTATION OR CREATION OF EXTREME RISK PROTECTION ORDER LAWS AT THE STATE LEVEL. HOSPITAL BASED VIOLENCE INTERVENTION PROGRAMS IS SOMETHING THAT DFA MEMBERS CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON. LEARNING TO WRITE AN OP-ED ABOUT THE SUBJECT OF GUN VIOLENCE IS ANOTHER SKILL THAT DFA FOCUSED ON IN 2022.
