A GRANT FROM THE USDA FARMERS MARKET PROMOTION PROGRAM HAS EQUIPPED MIFMA WITH THE FUNDS TO LAUNCH A STATEWIDE COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN TO ATTRACT RESIDENTS AND TOURISTS ALIKE TO SHOP AT MICHIGAN'S FARMERS MARKETS. IN 2021, THE CAMPAIGN INCLUDED PAID ADVERTISING, VIDEO PRODUCTION, AND DISTRIBUTION OF TEMPLATES FOR MANAGERS TO USE TO PROMOTE THEIR OWN MARKETS.
MIFMA ENGAGES IN FOOD ACCESS EFFORTS EACH YEAR TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF FARMERS MARKETS THAT ACCEPT FOOD ASSISTANCE BENEFITS AND TO SUPPORT MARKETS THAT DO. IN 2021, MIFMA STAFF ASSISTED FARMERS MARKETS AND FARMERS ACCEPTING SNAP IN APPLYING TO RECEIVE 36 WIRELESS POINT OF SALE DEVICES FUNDED BY THE STATE OF MICHIGAN.
MIFMA'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING CONSISTS OF AN ANNUAL CONFERENCE, THE MARKET MANAGER CERTIFICATE PROGRAM, THE FARMERS MARKETS AT THE CAPITOL EVENTS, AND OTHER WEBINARS, RESOURCES, AND EVENTS. IN 2021, 119 PARTICIPANTS ATTENDED A TWO-DAY CONFERENCE HELD VIRTUALLY BY MIFMA TO LEARN THE LATEST INFORMATION ABOUT FARMERS MARKET MANAGEMENT AND OPERATION. THE MARKET MANAGER CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO ENCOURAGE FARMERS MARKET MANAGERS TO PURSUE LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ON TOPICS ESSENTIAL TO MARKET MANAGEMENT. A TOTAL OF 316 MARKET MANAGERS HAVE BEEN CERTIFIED SINCE THE PROGRAM'S INCEPTION IN 2011. ONE FARMERS MARKET AT THE CAPITOL WAS HELD IN SEPTEMBER OF 2021 WITH 45 VENDORS PRESENT AND ESTIMATED CUSTOMER ATTENDANCE OVER 3,600.
