UCAN PROVIDES EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE WITH RENT, UTILITIES, FOOD, CLOTHING, AND MEDICINE FREE OF CHARGE TO THOSE IN NEED WHO HAVE BEEN DEVASTATED BY THE COVID 19 PANDEMIC, RELATED EMPLOYMENT LOSS, AND RESULTING INFLATIONARY PRICES OF FOOD AND GASOLINE. THIS PROGRAM REACHES THE MOST VULNERABLE SEGEMENTS OF OUR CITY: SENIORS, REFUGEES, UNEMPLOYED/UNDEREMPLOYED, SINGLE MOTHERS, CHILDREN, AND THE DISABLED.
UCAN COORDINATES OPPORTUNITIES TO MEET THE NEEDS OF AT-RISK YOUTH BY: 1) PROVIDING FRESH FRUITS AND BREAKFAST ITEMS TO APPROXIMATELY 75 STUDENTS IN THE GREATER METRO ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOL. WEEKEND FOOD IS ALSO DISTRIBUTED TO ABOUT 25 FOOD INSECURE STUDENTS ON FRIDAYS TO ENSURE THEY HAVE ACCESS TO FOOD ON THE WEEKEND. 2) UCAN OFFERS MENTORING PROGRAMS TO AT-RISK YOUTH INCLUDING ELL CLASSES FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS. THESE MENTORING OPPORTUNITIES ARE PROVIDED IN THE SCHOOLS TO MAKE THEM ACCESSIBLE FOR THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF PARTICIPATION. FOOD IS ALSO PROVIDED AT THESE MENTORING PROGRAM MEETINGS.
UCAN PROVIDES NEEDED SERVICES AND SUPPLIES TO AT-RISK FAMILIES BY: 1) PROVIDING GIFT CERTIFICATES FOR NEEDY STUDENTS IN GRADES 6-12 ALONG WITH WINTER CLOTHING FOR YOUTH IN GRADES P-K TO 5TH GRADE. 2) AT THE START OF EACH SCHOOL YEAR, BACKPACKS OF NEEDED SCHOOL SUPPLIES ARE GIVEN TO STUDENTS OF FAMILIES WHO CANNOT AFFORD TO PROVIDE THESE ESSENTIAL MATERIALS TO THEIR CHILDREN. 3) EACH HOLIDAY SEASON, UCAN COORDINATES COMMUNITY DONATIONS OF CASH, FOOD, AND TOYS THROUGH ITS ADOPT A FAMILY PROGRAM. FAMILIES IN NEED RECEIVE HOLIDAY BOXES THAT INCLUDE ESSENTIALS TO CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS WITH JOY AND HOPE.
