THE NEIGHBORHOOD FOOD SHELF IS THE CORE PROGRAM OF GROVELAND EMERGENCY FOOD SHELF, INC. THE SHELF HAS OPERATED SINCE THE EARLY 1970'S, WAS INCORPORATED IN 1998, AFFIRMED AS A NON-PROFIT IN 2003. ON AVERAGE, APPROXIMATELY 3,491 CLIENTS USED THE SHELF THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. APPROXIMATELY 35 LBS OF FOOD WERE DISTRIBUTED TO EACH CLIENT. THAT AMOUNTS TO ABOUT 1,466,185 LBS OF FOOD DISTRIBUTED IN 2021.
GROVELAND EMERGENCY FOOD SHELF, INC. OPERATES, IN COLLABORATION WITH MINNEAPOLIS COMMUNITY & TECHNICAL COLLEGE (AKA MINNEAPOLIS COLLEGE), A SATELLITE FOOD SHELF ON THE MCTC CAMPUS. CLOSE TO 55 STUDENTS USED THE MINNEAPOLIS COLLEGE FOOD PANTRY EACH WEEK. THERE WERE CLOSE TO 3,000 VISITS TO THE PANTRY IN 2021.
GROVELAND BEGAN A NEW COLLABORATION IN 2020 WITH LIBERTY COMMUNITY CHURCH IN N. MINNEAPOLIS. THIS COLLABORATION TAKES SEVERAL FORMS. 1) GRANTS WERE MADE TO THE CHURCH'S EMERGENCY FUND DESIGNATED FOR FOOD RELIEF, 2) FRESH PRODUCE, MEATS AND OTHER PERISHABLES WERE PROVIDED FOR MEALS TO STUDENTS OF THE CHURCH'S 21ST CENTURY ACADEMY, AN AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM THAT ACTED AS A WIFI POD DURING MOST OF THE PANDEMIC. DUE TO THE PANDEMIC AND THE NEWNESS OF THIS COLLABORATION, MANAGEMENT OF STATISTICS WAS NEGLIGIBLE. HOWEVER, THERE WERE AT VARYING 25-50 STUDENTS BEING SERVED THREE MEALS A WEEK.
DURING THE 1ST HALF OF 2020, GROVELAND OPERATED IN COLLABORATION WITH LUTHERAN SOCIAL SERVICES' STREET SURVIVAL PROGRAM, GROVELAND FOOD FOR YOUTH. THIS PROGRAM OPERATED SINCE THE EARLY 2000'S WITH DEDICATED HOURS FOR YOUTH AGED 23 OR YOUNGER. LUTHERAN SOCIAL SERVICES EXITED THE COLLABORATION DUE TO THE PANDEMIC.
